I was never the most attractive girl. I was tall and lanky through all of my years. My hair did what it wanted and I was kind of awkward. I graduated high school at 15, when most kids my age were starting high school. I never fit in with the other kids because they were driving when I became a teenager.
Now here I was walking up to the scuffed front desk to begin my new internship as a forensic scientist. I always had a knack for observing the small details.
"A-Audrey Frett. I'm here for the internship." I told the secretary, shakily.
"May I see your pass?" She asked.
"Oh yeah." More like 'oh great'. Now I would have to dig through my stupid purse to find my pass. As I hectically searched the contents of my purse, I felt someone come up behind me. Now there was a line.
My hands shook as I pulled out my pass and handed it to her.
"Here's your stuff, Ms. Frett. You're mentor and boss will be Mr. Allen. Here's where his lab is located. " she told me, piling things into my arms. I nodded.
"Thank you." I told her stepping to the side of the desk and shifting the things in my arms so they wouldn't fall. I followed the printed map to where the lab was and knocked on the door.
"One second." I heard a voice call. The door opened revealing a young man. I wasn't expecting to be working with a guy who looked barely older than me.
"Oh, are you the new intern?" He asked. I nodded.
"Yeah, I'm Audrey Frett. Nice to meet you." I said. He stuck out his hand to shake. I tentively shook it and a blur of pictures ran through my head. God, when was I going to get used to that. He gave me a strange look but seemed to shake it off.
"Here let me help you with some of that." He said, taking some of the folders. "I know how they pile you up the first day." He reassured me. He led my inside and showed me where I could put my stuff. "I'm Barry Allen by the way." He told me. "You can just call me Barry though. I just feel too young to be called Mr. Allen at this point. " he told me. "I'm sorry this place is such a mess." He apologized.
"No it's fine. It feels more real like this. " I told him, shaking my head. He chuckled.
"Well I read you're resume. It's quite impressive." He commented. I blushed.
"Well I try not to make a big deal of it." I told him.
"Why not? You're obviously intelligent." He asked, curiously.
"When you're smart or talented, people expect things of you. They expect you to fix all their problems and to never mess up. So when you do mess up, they start blaming all their problems on you. I just can't take that stuff anymore." I explained.
"I get it." He told me, nodding. I raised an eyebrow.
"You do?" I ask. His eyes widened like he realized he had said something wrong
"Oh yeah." He paused. "I mean I'm pretty smart around here and I get that feeling all the time." He told me, sounding a little desperate for words. I nodded. Then his phone dinged. He looked at it. "Well let's see how you observe your first crime scene. Let's go." He told me, sending me a grin.
