▬▬▬▬

Where Cypress Hyun comes from, you learn to swing an axe before you learn to read, and by twelve years old you are forced swing that axe for six hours every day for the rest of your life, till you finally die from exhaustion and the Peacekeepers burn your corpse with the rest. The Pines are cruel, Press knew. Once, when she was young and hopeful, Press might have witnessed all the cruelty of the lumber yards and smiled anyway. Now, though, Press's father is dead and all she has left is her mother, mute from the trauma of her husband's death.

Now, Press spends fourteen hours every day in the lumber yard, lost to the rise and fall of her iron axe splitting through rough pine bark, over and over again, till a Peacekeeper eventually says "Enough," and she brings home the smells of tree sap and sweat and earth. Her mom always leaves a meal at the dinner table for when Press finally limps home from work, sore to the bone and always ravenous enough to scarf it all down. The Pines are cruel, Press knows. But I know love. Love is the meals Mom leaves on the table, still warm. Many dark nights, the only joy Press feels is when she thinks of her mother.

Where Press Hyun comes from, you put your name in the Reaping bowl a dozen times so you can secure meals of stale tesserae grain to feed your family. Press is the only child of a mother too sickly to lift an axe. So she puts her name in more times each year, till she's eighteen and her name is printed on three dozen slips of paper. The Pines are cruel, Press thinks on Reaping Day. But I am still kind. I will be better than this rotten world. Even when she's reaped for the 72nd Hunger Games, Press swears not to kill, swears not to murder people the same way the Peacekeepers murdered her father. In a deadly game won by blood, Cypress Hyun yearns to keep her hands clean.
