▬▬▬▬
All Helene Graves remembers of her father's death is how, afterward, her mother's blood-slick hands had cupped her cheeks lovingly, leaving behind warm smears of red. "You did what needed to be done," Mom had whispered with a smile. "And now we're free."
As Hel watched the coroner zip the body bag shut over her father's swollen face, she decided that she didn't feel free at all. Mom had twined her arms around Hel's shoulders and pulled her close, as if the cops might drag Hel away with the corpse. As if they might glimpse the drying blood on her daughter's hands and know . . . It was there in the hallway, carpet seeped with gore, snared by her mother's arms, that Helene understood. Mom wanted me to kill Dad so her own hands stayed clean. And now I'm a murderer in a cage.
Eight years after she slid a knife through the tendons on both her father's wrists, Hel had learned how to live in captivity. She spoke softly and smiled easily. She wore modest skirts and tied ribbons in her hair. She attended church and played the violin so her mother could flaunt her pearls at the recitals. To students at Wiskayok High, the only truly odd thing about Helene Graves was the camera bag always at her hip. She seemed happier peering through a camera lens than she ever appeared in others' company. Photography became Hel's buffer between the real world and herself; her way of processing the current, overwhelming moment. It kept her sane when the loneliness crept in.
