We had already finished dinner, and by the time we were done unpacking our bags, it was bed time.
There are circa 141,500 words in the English dictionary, and not one of them could possibly describe how awkward that evening was. It's true, I had mentioned I fancied him, but he was a total stranger to me nonetheless.
"You can take the bed." Noah said, "I'll sleep on the floor." He reached for a spare blanket in the room's wardrobe.
"Hell no." I replied boldly.
He turned around in confusion, and that confused expression had only grown bigger as he saw me visibly regretting what I had just said.
I took a deep breath. "You can't possibly be the one sleeping on the floor!" I composed myself.
"You're team captain, and a great setter!" I had reduced the distance between the two of us. Digging through my imagination for any believable excuse I could find."I'm just an opposite, it's true that I'm one of the only few opposites in our team, but I can be replaced, no one could lead the team as well as you." I kept blabbering, trying to make up for that dumb thought I had impulsively said out loud. "Look- thing is, most of the time I'm not even on the court. I'm a bench warmer at best- it would be dumb for you to risk injury." Once my blabbering had ended, silence filled the room. Making everything much more awkward.
"That's the corniest shit that's ever come out of your mouth. I'm not gonna die if I sleep on the floor once." He reassured me, although we both knew I really didn't need any of it.
"...You might wake up with a sore neck, or your back and shoulders even." This time it was pure concern, not some shitty attempt at me covering up the fact that I would've loved if we were to share the bed like those love stories one would come across every now and then.
He knew that, I could tell he knew because his expression changed, for a minute, his eyes were softer and genuine. "I mean if you really wish so, I wouldn't mind having the bed for myself." He joked, as he sat on the bed."But just so you know, it's not gonna reflect good on the 'oh so great!' team captain if one of our most needed players gets injured because of me." He added, his eyes now had this playfully snarky look, and his half grin could only confirm it.
"Oh what shall we possibly do then?" I played along. "Sleep with me." He said, as if he were daring me to do such thing.
I was exploding. Forget butterflies, I had a whole swarm of bees in my stomach, I could feel my cheeks getting rose, but I, of course, did not want him to feel the satisfaction.
"I have standards, you know?" I adjusted as many pillows as I had found near a corner, creating a pile that would be my bed for the following days."Ouch." Noah said, as he fixed his sheets and laid down.
"Can't handle rejection?" I let out a chuckle. "Can't be bothered." He smiled.
"Well good night, corny boy." He said at last, as he turned on his side and began drifting off to sleep. "Good night, oh so great team captain." I replied, doing the same. That night had passed on quickly. Surprisingly enough, my improvised pillow pile was comfortable, and I had managed to get a good sleep.
In the morning, I was woken up by two mesmerizing green eyes staring right down at me. "I'm surprised you managed to sleep so well on that thing." Noah said in a tone that seemed to be a combination of astonishment and concern. "Are you a cat by any chance?" He added.
"Well good morning to you too." I stretched, unamused at his not-so-needed commentary.
He smiled._________________________________
"OH. MY. GOD." Bill spat out half of the generous bite he had taken out from his hazelnut croissant.
"YOU ACTUALLY DID SHARE A ROOM WITH NOAH!!" He was probably more ecstatic than a snobbish rich girl winning the lottery.
"Relax. Literally nothing interesting happened." I wiped off some crumbs that got on my arm. "So you say." Bill replied, disappointed at what he had just heard from me.
