One Saturday morning, Ava was sitting in her living room waiting for her dad to come back from doing chores down on the ranch. Ava and her family lived on a big ranch in New Mexico. It was her dad's job to feed the cattle. Suddenly there was a knock on the door. Thinking it was her dad, she opened the door. But it was not her dad; it was Phill, one of her dads' friends who helped on the ranch. He wore a grim expression. He told Ava to go get her mom. She ran into her mom's room and woke her up. Phill explained what happened. Ava's dad had passed away in a tractor accident. A few days later, they were driving from her dad's funeral. When they got home her mom turned to her. "I have a friend in the city," Mom said. "You are going to work for her as her assistant at her chocolate factory ." What!" exclaimed Ava. "But I'm only 13!"We need money and I have to take care of your brothers." Ava ran to her room. And she wept, she cried about having to leave, she cried for her father. A week later she was on a train heading to the big city of Endcliffe. When she got off the train the train station was a mess. The windows were broken, trash cans tipped, and dirt was everywhere. Just then a pair of glowing yellow eyes appeared in the groom, then two, then over a dozen. The eyes belonged to people with gray rotting skin. The people started throwing themselves at the other passengers. She ran, ran as fast as her sore legs could take her.
