My sleeves were rolled up to my elbows, sitting across from Damien and Charlie on a desk. It was similar to ones at school, yet bigger and made of a darker wood.
A notebook was in front of the pair, them discussing something. Music filled my ears via my earphones. The sweet sound of 'I Write Sins Not Tragedies', filled my ears. "What a beautiful wedding! What a beautiful wedding!" says a bridesmaid to a waiter," I sang quietly, tapping the table in front of me. "And, yes, but what a shame, what a shame the poor groom's bride is a-"
"Very pleasant lady, congratulations to the lovely couple. Carry on with the wedding, I wish you the best of luck for the future." Charlie interrupted my singing, replacing the lyrics. I glared at him for ruining the song before pausing the song and taking my earphones out. "No foul language in the HQ." I rolled my eyes at him acting like an adult.
"Whore isn't foul language."
"Is too!"
"Is not!" I bickered, Damien having to glare at the both of us to stop. It was intimidating, but nothing like the stone cold gaze of Tessa Gray.
"We planned out a quick schedule for you, so you can practise and learn. Well, we just wrote down what order you'll do them, there isn't a set time for how long. Whatever you're good at we'll spend less time doing and whatever you're not good at we'll spend more time doing. Simple enough." Charlie explained, passing the notebook over. I nodded and looked at the notebook.
Athletics - Tessa
Hand to hand - Damien
Self defense - Damien
Range - Tessa
Melee - Tessa
Hacking - Charlie
Investigating - Charlie
"Of course, you'll have breaks every so often. That's just a rough guide. We doubt you'll need melee much, since we only really use guns, but sometimes you'll use knives and daggers so you may need it." Charlie said, as if he wasn't talking about lethal weapons. I hated how casual he seemed. I nodded, a random question popping into my mind.
"When Tessa said you needed to train me, you two said that you only brought me here to keep me safe - or something along the lines. Yet, when you were talking to me you said, 'we need your help finding Matt,' Explain." I demanded, leaning back and pushing my glasses back onto the bridge of my nose. My arms were crossed over my chest and I felt important.
The two shared a grin, much to my annoyance. "You catch on quick, kid. We said two different things to see how smart you are," Charlie replied, "From your school records and IQ, you are one of the smartest kids in the whole country. Top one hundred, at least. One of the reasons we need your help, you can most likely decipher clues like no ones business."
Damien opened a draw from their side of the desk, handing me two files. "You have six hours to figure out the culprit for both cases. All evidence you need can be found from it. Create a suspect list and who you think the murder. Include everything you think. Write down the culprit and why." The younger boy explained. "None of it is real, so don't worry."
"Your time starts.... Now."
-
The first file lay closed, a few pieces of paper stapled together with all my thoughts, the suspect list and culprit lay next to it. The whole case took me a total of two hours, so it was considerably easy. The second one however caused my head to spin. The suspect list was two pages long, and none of the evidence added up. Frustration was my only emotion. The only possible solution was that it was a group crime. I had an hour left until I had to be done. I took a final examination of the clues, begging my mind to connect the pieces. I read over them once more.
Something clicked.
All my exasperation left my body, replaced with happiness as I wrote down my answer along side my thoughts. The only possible solution that I could think of. Time went on as I pieced together the rest, six hours finally passing and the duo returned. They took the files and my results back, my body finally able to relax for a few minutes.
"Oh my God..." Damien mumbled, his eyes travelling over the paper. The whispered to each other before taking out a notebook and scribbling something down.
"You did okay, could of been better." Charlie said, receiving a sharp elbow to his stomach from Damien. A soft oof escaped his mouth and he coughed.
"You did exceptional,Liz." Damien said, not bothering to ask Charlie if he was alright. A grin spread onto my face.
"Get some rest, it's late. Training begins tomorrow."
