The Foster Mom

I barely remember what happened last night. I was talking with Asch and Shira. A man came up looking for a fight. I taught him a lesson.... I was taken away... That's it. I was punished again. This isn't the first time this has happened. The first few times, I actually remembered everything they did to me. More recent punishments have all been a blur. A minor inconvenience. I'm still shocked they make me go through that when I feel almost nothing on my left side due to the burns and scars from my ex-adoptive father and cuts I've inflicted upon myself.

Wait. My body. I search my figure for any new marks or scars I can make up a fake story about, but I find nothing. Looks like my prayers for being able to tell the kids nothing happened have been answered. All I could find that wasn't exactly a scar was a fresh burn on my arm. It wasn't a third-degree, but it was wrapped in bandages, hence why I didn't see it at first.

"What happened, then...? Did they... give up on me..?" I was happy that I wouldn't have to be taken away—possibly—anymore, but I was also broken because of the amount of times people have done so to me. Just given up and left me to practically die.

"666? You awake?" I heard Nurse Foster ask before gently opening my door. My heart raced and I swear I felt tears form in my eyes as the last person I trusted walked in.

"M-Miss Foster...!" I whimpered as I stumbled up to her and hugged her tightly. She was taken aback by my sudden show of affection, but returned it nonetheless.

"Hey there, little one..." She spoke gently. The only one I'd ever let talk to me in such a manor.

"What.. what happened to me..?" I dared to ask. She took a breath and took me back to my bed before sitting down beside me, gently grasping my hand with her own.

"They tried to punish you again, but when they started burning your arm, all you did was scream... and laugh... It terrified them that you found it enjoyable and simply asked me to wrap you up and put you to bed..." She explained, making me scoff.

"They should've known I'd enjoy it, it's like they don't even know me!" I laugh.

"Hino... You can't keep doing this... You're clearly suffering and using a smile and laugh to cover it up... We both know you went through Hell before you ended up here, and I understand you can't control your laughter sometimes, but it's getting concerning..." She spoke seriously, making me look in my lap as I didn't want to meet her gaze.

"He was dissing the newbies... they're kids... not much younger than me. I was just defending them, I swear!" I practically jumped up on her like some dog.

"By ripping open his jaw?" She questioned with a raised eyebrow and a knowing look in her eyes. I looked away and backed off, curling up on my bed like a dog. "You know... they thought your wolf ears and tail were part of your aggression... That's why they removed them... You looked so perfect with them, so happy whenever you pet your own tail or I scratched behind your ear. It broke my heart when they took that away from you..." She spoke softly. I narrowed my gaze at her.

"Just because they stole my tail and ears doesn't mean I'll be any less aggressive or cooperative... If anything, taking them away only made me WORSE!" I barked, gripping my head as tears threatened to spill. Miss Foster only laid down beside me, wrapping her arms around my waist as her head rested on my pillow.

"I swear once I get the chance, I'll find a way to get them back... I know you prefer being what you were than a 'dangerous' human..." She muttered. I whined softly. The problem is ever since they took away my wolf parts, I haven't been able to shift properly. Sure, my eyes turn gold and my claws get sharper as well as my teeth, but nothing about me really changes...

"Promises are nothing.... Actions determine whether you are trustworthy or not..." I growled softly. I heard her sigh.

"I know... Thing is... when I promise you something... I follow through one way or another..." She spoke, lifting her head and resting it on her hand as she looked down on me. "Because you're my favorite of them all..." I freeze.

"...... Really....?" I mutter softly.

"Really. You fascinate me, Hino. Your species, your personality... everything. Even that little inner demon of yours." She giggled, drawing Vex out—who had a slightly shocked look on her black face.

"You aren't afraid of us?" We both ask. She shook her head.

"I thought that was obvious?" She chuckled, making me curl up a little further, now more out of embarrassment. "I promise to you and Vex herself... I'll get your wolf back..." She stopped there. I was hoping she'd say 'and help you escape,' but something tells me she wasn't planning on letting me go. I couldn't blame her. She could get caught and punish her rather than me. I turned around and hugged her tightly.

"I love you, Mama..." I muttered. Since we met, she'd treated me as her own. She always treated everyone well, but she was so drawn to me that we got closer than anyone else. I suppose it was because of her motherly actions that I'd grown to think of her as my own mother.

"I love you, too, Puppy..." She whispered, planting a kiss on my head as she hugged back. Yet another reason to call her my mother. She gave me that nickname when I first arrived. I happened to be in my wolf form, but it was far smaller than it was meant to be. After she whispered a goodbye to me, she left my room, leaving me to my thoughts. All I did was keep in tears and think of how I'd escape once I got my wolf back. I silently swore that night that once I got out, I'd burn the place down with Miss Foster by my side and then we'd finally get to live on our own far away from here and simply live with each other forever. Even as a seventeen-year-old, I still crave a real family.
