The man loomed over the trembling old woman, brandishing a knife with a cruel sneer. “Give me your money, old woman!” he growled.
The frail woman clutched her tattered purse tightly, her voice trembling as she pleaded, “Young man, please, spare me. I only have three dollars to buy toys for my grandchildren.”
Her words only fueled his anger as he grabbed the purse from her hands with such force that it left her fingers aching. Suddenly, a chilling gust of black wind swirled around the man, enveloping him in its shadowy embrace.
“What in the—” he managed to say before a piercing scream of agony echoed through the narrow alleyway. The black smoke coiled tighter around him until he vanished without a trace.
From the depths of the shadows emerged a figure clad in dark leather, his presence commanding and eerie. He wore a plague doctor’s mask, its elongated beak lending an air of mystery, and his silver hair glinted faintly in the dim light. Bending gracefully, he retrieved the fallen purse and handed it to the bewildered old woman.
“Here you go, madam,” he said, his voice deep, soothing, yet undeniably intimidating.
The woman hesitated, fear flickering in her eyes, but then a small smile crept onto her face. “Thank you, young man. I wish more people were like you—helping us old folks. Not like those so-called heroes in their leagues. They only bother with big risks, leaving us to fend for ourselves in these dangerous alleys.” She chuckled softly, clutching her purse close as she shuffled away.
The man watched her until she disappeared from sight, his expression unreadable. He turned to leave, his form blending with the shadows, when a soft voice broke the silence.
“Mr. Crow,” it called, almost a whisper but carrying a familiarity that made him pause.
He turned slightly, his silver gaze narrowing as he saw the figure step out of the shadows. It was a woman, clad in a sleek black outfit that hugged her form, adorned with tactical straps and a hood that concealed most of her face. Her bow was slung across her back, her quiver brimming with arrows. The light of the moon danced off her leather armor, giving her an ethereal, almost dangerous beauty.
“Miss Chaos,” he acknowledged, leaning casually against the wall. “What brings you here?”
She stepped closer, the faint sound of her boots echoing in the quiet alley. Her gaze lingered on him, her eyes partially obscured by her hood. There was something captivating about his presence—the silver hair, his broad, muscular frame, and the way his voice carried an effortless authority.
“You’re at it again,” she said softly, her voice tinged with both amusement and curiosity. “Helping the poor and helpless in these alleys.”
“Who else will?” he replied, his gaze fixed on the sky. “You? You’re a hero, after all. And I… I am an anti-villain.”
She leaned against the wall beside him, her shoulder barely brushing his, though the touch was deliberate. Her eyes searched his face, as though seeking something beyond his enigmatic mask. “You speak as though you’ve resigned yourself to the role, as if you don’t believe there’s more to this… to us.”
He tilted his head, his lips curling into a faint smirk beneath his mask. “Is there?” he asked, his voice low, almost teasing.
Her heart quickened at the way he spoke, the way he looked at her, even as he refused to meet her gaze directly. “I wonder,” she murmured, her voice barely audible.
A moment of silence stretched between them, heavy with unspoken thoughts and questions. Then, without warning, he stepped away, his form dissolving into the black tendrils of smoke that seemed to obey his every whim.
