The inaugural BOOK TO DIE FOR is one of my all-time favourite Southern Gothic novels: Tom Piccirilli's A CHOIR OF ILL CHILDREN (2003). Back in Rue Morgue #61, we included it in The Connoisseur's Guide to 50 Alternative Books where I lauded it as:
"Haunting and unbelievably lyrical, A CHOIR OF ILL CHILDREN infuses Piccirilli's exceptionally poetic and literate style with all the strange occurrences, bizarre characters, physical deformities and supernatural intrique one expects in a Southern Gothic yarn. A familial tale of a swampland community in decline, it's stunning and unforgettable. Expect to become hopelessly lost in these pages."
Behold, too, CHOIR's striking original cover (pictured above), as it is work of absolute, undeniable beauty.
The mass-market release of A CHOIR OF ILL CHILDREN (unfortunately featuring far less noteworthy cover art) is available from Amazon.com for less than $10. Happy, haunting reading!
