They say to be completely loyal is to devote your very being for the cause.

If not for him, I certainly wouldn't be here, so I have no problem with that. I swore an oath, pledged my life to my prince- one wrong move would have me thrown back out in the streets, so I have to do a good job.

Have I misunderstood him? Or have I just never really understood all this time?

I walk in the garden behind the building. It's a full moon tonight, and I spot a well in between the rose bushes and marble statues. What a simple well, I thought. Not very much like the rest of this place. Reaching in my pocket, I felt around for loose change, but only found 30 cents. Nevertheless, I threw the coins in, and prayed.

No, I wasn't a very religious person, but I was desperate by then. Desperate to be forgiven, desperate to be loved, desperate for... well, who knows? (I don't know all but I know some.) Now every word echoes in my head.

Then, I tripped over a crack in the pavement. I cursed the stars for the lack of light, and decided that sitting would be best.

Think of the good times, we had some good times. I say, mostly to myself. There were flowers of many different colors adorning the tables and the food- too seasoned but was more delicious than anything I had ever tasted, if I had tasted much at all. He was in a good mood that day, and clinked his glass against mine. A single moth, attracted by the light, flew into the candle and dropped dead on the table cloth. My prince laughed, how unlucky it is, he says. "Never unlucky to dine with the prince." I reply, and swept the dead moth up and threw it out.

Never unlucky to be dressed in clean clothing, to be fed well and trained and educated. Never unlucky to remain by your side. But I saw the blood on his face and like a mirror that reflected my own tear stained face- I saw myself. Why? You ask. Why why why?

It's presumption or despair. Thoughts are not sins if driven away at once, so I do so quickly. "What an extreme green." The garden was very beautiful indeed, and I rest by the side of the well. When the cock crowed the next morning I realized I had slept through the full moonlight.

Just behind the walls that separated the compound from the outside, I could hear busy sounds of a market. Comforting, the voices of fruit-sellers and bread makers and the likes. By now the garden had become too much, though, too much red and white. How unlucky indeed, to grow red roses here.

I made my way back, only stopping to listen to a bird sing a very lonely song. I heard from someone that it is endangered, I think. I didn't stay long, the freshness of the garden was intoxicating.

"When I become king, I will rule fair and just. Italy will become a land as grand as if only in dreams." He says. "When that happens, will you still be by my side, Livio?"

"A land as grand as if only in dreams? Does such a place exist?"

"I will make it so. You have yet to answer me, Livio."
