Chapter Three

Escaping the QZ

The four of them walked through the rain to Joel's and Tess's apartment. Julia got there and turned to the two adults. "I'll be back in a couple hours, we leave tonight," Julia said and started to walk off. "Uh and where are you going?" Tess called out down the hallway and Julia turned around. "I have shit to take care of and things to grab, just watch Ellie. We leave after dark," Julia said and then walked away for good. Ellie watched the woman walk away, hoping she would come back.

Julia had gone back to her own apartment, grabbed whatever she thought would be needed. She didn't plan on returning back to this dump she lived in for the past several years. She planned to stick with Ellie even if that meant sticking with the fireflies. In her backpack had cans of food, things she had stocked up on for years, bottles of water and also hygiene products she had found out and about. 

By the time she returned to Joel and Tess's apartment, it was dark outside. She arrived just at the same time as Tess. "You get what you need?" Tess asked. Julia nodded, "yeah, we ready to go?" Tess opened the door, "let's find out,"

They both walked in to see Ellie sat on a chair and Joel stood up in the middle of the room. "The spot under Lancaster looks good," Tess stated, then walking to grab her jacket as well as Joels. "Ellie put your jacket on, it's time to go," Julia said to the girl who looked glad that Julia was back.

The group had managed to make it outside but FEDRA was everywhere. Ellie stood up, "Holy shit, I'm actually outside," she said but Julia pulled her down. "Ellie, be fucking careful,"

Tess turned to the two, "We're gonna take the left edge around the buffer zone, stay close and follow Julia's lead," Tess said mainly to Ellie. Tess then went ahead whilst Julia followed, who was then followed by Ellie who was then followed by Joel. They all crawled under the bus, and then walked around as vehicles and helicopters were heard in the distance, stopping every now and then to let FEDRA pass them without getting spotted.

They turned the corner where a FEDRA solider was stood pissing against a wall. They tried to get past without being spotted but he heard them and turned around. "What the hell? Hey, hey! Don't move!" he said zipping up his pants. "Shit," Julia muttered under her breath. This was it, they would be turned over to FEDRA and be hung for their crimes.

"Okay, let's talk this out" Joel said but the FEDRA agent wasn't having it. "Turn around,"

"Hold on," Joel said. Julia looked between the men and reached for her gun as she stood next to Ellie. "Get on your fuckin' knees. Get on your fuckin' knees!" the guy yelled.

"Now hold on," Joel said still trying to reason with him but it wasn't going to work. Julia knew that. FEDRA agents were all assholes, no point trying to reason with them. "What did I fuckin' tell you man? I said stay the fuck home. Get on your knees," the man said, he clearly knew Joel.

The group all turned around, hands up and got on their knees. Julia was between Ellie and Joel. She shared a look with Ellie and they shared words without saying anything.

It's going to be okay. Julia said by looking at Ellie.

"Listen, you let us do this run, we'll split the cards with you," Tess said trying to reason with him.

"Oh, will you?" the man asked sarcastically. "Yeah." Tess said. "I'm so blessed. Hands on your head. Eyes forward." he said but they didn't listen. "Hands on your head!" and all hands went up to their heads. "Really man?" 

"Yep. We're doin' this by the book." the FEDRA agent said. Tess rolled her eyes, "Jesus Christ," and then she was zapped with the scanner. It beeps green. Julia closed her eyes and zoned out, trying to think of how she can get Ellie out of the situation of being zapped. Once she gets scanned, they are all going to shoot at her. Julia feels herself being zapped whilst he still spoke to Joel and Tess. Julia opened her eyes and looked at Ellie out the corner of her eyes who held her knife in her hands.

"Outta your fuckin' mind..." the fedora agent said as he went to zap Ellie but Ellie screamed and stabbed the man in his leg. "Ellie!" Tess shouted. "Ellie what the..." Tess said and the three adults were now stood.

"Fucking' bitch! Fuck!" he groaned but then grabbed his gun and pointed it at Ellie but Joel stood in the way. Julia grabbed her gun and pointed it at the man, "Put your fuckin' gun down," she said coldly. "We can fix this," Joel said, not wanting anyone to shoot as it would draw more attention. "Move," the agent said to Joel, but Joel didn't move. Julia did though and she very quickly dropped her and took a knife out of her boot which she then used as she pounced onto of the FEDRA agent and held the knife to his throat. "Should have taken the offer we gave you," and she slit his throat quickly as he screamed. 

Ellie stood and looked in awe of the woman who just jumped the man whilst Joel looked in slight horror yet also satisfied because he was about to do the same thing. Tess picked up the scanner and saw it was red after scanning Ellie. "Joel!" she screamed lifting the scanner. Joel looked and noticed, Julia stood up quickly, grabbing her gun and standing in front of Ellie, ready to kill them too if she had to.

"I'm not sick! I'm not sick!" Ellie kept repeating trying to convince them. Julia looked at them, "She's not sick, her bite is three weeks old guy, we need to move now."

Joel shook his head, "Nobody lasts more than a day!" 

Ellie pulled up her sleeve, "Does this look a day old to you?" The two adults looked in horror at it whilst Julia stared them down. "You would've fucking killed me!"

"I should fucking kill you!" Tess shouted. "When did it happen?" she then asked. "None of that matters, you have to trust us. We need to move now or they will catch us," Julia said hearing FEDRA in the distance. "Okay, but full explanation is going to be needed," Tess said pointing a finger at Julia who put her gun down. "We gotta move, come on," Julia said and the four of them squeezed through the fence gap and away from FEDRA as them sky rumbled and screeching in the distance.

No going back now.
