[Leon's Pov]
It's never my intention to be this way, but I do what I need to protect people, and most importantly her. In a way, that feels like the only thing I can actually give her. It's crazy because just a glance of me, her eyes light up. She never fails to make sure I feel like I matter.
In reality, Raine has every reason to be pissed. In fact, I'm starting to think she's not even human the way she's handling all of this.
"Will you come home tonight?" She gives a desperate look, patiently waiting for a response that would be 'yes.' However, I didn't have one. How do I tell her they called me in again? How do I tell her, there's a crap ton of shit happening in headquarters only a select few know about.
"I see."
No one will ever truly understand how painful it is to see so much hope and light leave the eyes and aura of someone you call your wife. It had already left me a while ago, so I am very much addicted to hers. It's not healthy. I should've healed that part of me before even bringing her into this.
We've yet to have a breakthrough for us, but I cannot keep expecting her to stay civilized with this whole ordeal. It's worse she wants to help. It's just too dangerous.
To see Raine Kennedy walk out that door and I'm not beside her...That shit sucks.
———
"Agent Kennedy, we have new intel on a secret location we'd like you keep sight of. You have 72 hours before you are to depart from station 819. Let your team know all you will need to succeed.""Is that all?"
"Yes, report to headquarters at 3:15 pm."
I nod and walk back out the door. I pull out my phone and dial a number. "I actually will be home tonight, let's take a chill day."————
(Flashback)
📍:Headquarters"You been assigned to the mission with Raine Coleman. She's a behavioral Analyst and you are to get her to the suspect safely and keep her unharmed. If not able to or ends up in a inadequate dangerous location, you are to return immediately. Then we will send you out again based off the intel you've collected."
"Wait, but I didn't-"
"It's a direct order sir." Said the communicator.
I sigh. It's been 2 years since the Raccoon City Incident, and I've evidently been forced into a position where I can't quite escape the "Bioweapons of the world." In a way, I don't mind...the sole purpose of me even trying is to help protect people, but knowing there's a constant evil of power-wanting and greedy corrupt people all in this system. It's sickening. I trust no one here really.
"Can I at least get the brief then?" I respond.
"Of course. Follow me."
...Raine Coleman huh? I wonder if it's her.
———
"That will conclude the brief. Be ready to set out at directly 16:00."I nod while gathering my case. Hopefully, this ordeal is an in and out case scenario. I walk to the elevator head faced down at the sheet of paper in which provides a character description of the guy and or woman we were looking for. It's always a good day to have someone else's life on your hands.
I give a long deep stress relieving sigh as I look up almost running into someone.
"Shit, I'm so very sorry!" She curses at herself bending down to pick up a file. I race her to the file, finally able to reach her eyes. Those beautiful glistening brown eyes.
I follow her up with a smile. That thing where you notice a certain confidence to lady when she finds it, is written all over her.
She pauses,"You.."
"Meee?" I smirk with sarcastic response.
"Effing great."she mumbled.
"You know it's not very professional to use such profanity on the clock." I say with a small grin.
"You would've been out a job a while ago then." She says back with a small back.
"Has it really been that long? I wasn't sure if it was you they meant.." I say quietly.
"Kennedy, just how many Raine Colemans' do you think exist on this earth?"
Kennedy..heh.
I chuckle, "It's a big world out there, you never know."
She smiles, "Good to see you, you look well."
Looking well and feeling well are two entirely different things.
"Ahh. Appreciate that. You've uhh grown a lot."
"Yep, that's what people do, Leon." She says with a giggle. I don't know why I couldn't just simply say that she was stunning.
Or maybe I couldn't get around the fact my name has never sounded so satisfying coming from someone's lips ever until-
"I hope I've grown up in a good way?" She says staring me deadly in the eye.
"You definitely have. No doubt about that." I respond.
I see a reddish tint develop on her amber toned brown skin at the tip of her cheek. I'm met a with a smile.
"You're so awky." She says playfully walking away.
"See you tomorrow?" I yell down the hallway.
"Bright and early!" She says waving bye.
Maybe I have a thing for confident sassy women. I don't know man, I need to figure my shit out. Sigh.
