Caleb walked home that morning, feeling quite satisfied with what he had done. But he was worried. Worried that someone would find out. Worried that his mom would find out mostly. As far as she knows, he is straight. She was always getting into his business. She was bound to find out. He was scared what she would do.
Caleb finally got home. All the lights appeared to be off. He thought that everyone was asleep. He walked inside and went straight to his room. He got into his bed and fell swiftly to sleep. He thought everything was fine. He was in a deep sleep, dreaming about him and Wade. It was perfect.
The next morning, at around nine o'clock in the morning, Caleb woke up, got dressed, then walked out into the kitchen to eat. His mom was sitting at the kitchen table, waiting for him. He got some waffles, sat down, and prepared for her to be upset with him.
"Where were you last night?" Asked Caleb's mom.
"I told you... I went to Wade's house..." Said Caleb, with a shaky voice.
"Are you sure you aren't lying to me?" Asked his mom.
"Yes. I'm sure," said Caleb, "I went to Wade's house to help him with some things."
"Caleb... You're lying to me. I don't appreciate that. I thought I had raised you better than that." Said Caleb's mom, with a stern voice.
"Mom, I'm not lying. I really did go to Wade's house. You've got to believe me. I have no reason to lie to you. I know I should have called you to tell you that I was going to be over there late, but I didn't know. I lost track of time." Explained Caleb.
"Caleb, what time did you get home?" Asked his mom.
"About seven o'clock this morning." Said Caleb.
"I know what you were really doing Caleb..." Said his mom.
"What do you mean," said Caleb, "I am telling you the truth. I told you where I was. I went over to Wade's house."
"Caleb, I want to believe you, I really do. You're a good kid and I want to imagine that you would not lie to me. But Caleb... I'm going to ask you one more time," said Caleb's mom, "where were you last night?"
Caleb hesitantly responded, "I was at Wade's house."
"Caleb, do you have a girlfriend?" Asked his mom.
"No," said Caleb, "why would you think that?"
"Caleb, your neck... You have hickeys on your neck," explained his mom, "if you were with Wade last night, why would you have those..."
"Oh shit." Caleb whispered under his breath.
"Now... I'll ask you again... Caleb, where were you last night?" Asked his mom.
Caleb began to get more nervous than he was before. He knew he had to come out eventually, but he was not ready. His hands started to shake. His face got bright red. Suddenly, he didn't want his waffles anymore... He had to do what he had to do...
"Mom...," Caleb hesitated, "The marks on my neck.... They are from Wade... I really was with Wade last night. He and I are... Well... I'm... I'm gay..."
Caleb's mom looked up at him, then turned away, almost as if she couldn't believe what she had just heard. Caleb couldn't look her in the eyes. He wasn't sure what she was thinking about him. She stood up, walked over to him, raised her hand to him, and smacked him.
"Get out," she said, walking away, "you don't belong here. I don't care where you go, but you can't stay here."
Caleb saw this coming, but he never imagined it would hurt this badly. His mom was very religious. He knew she would never accept him for who he is. Tears rolling from his face, he slowly got up, and walked to his room to pack what he needed. He had two bags, one for clothes, and one for everything else that he wanted. He called Wade.
"Hey babe!," said Wade, "I have great news! Since I have a pretty stable job, and I've saved up a lot of money, I called my parents, and they are letting me move out! It is a little bit further away from your house than I live now, but it is so peaceful. I'm packing my stuff as we speak. I should be moved in by tonight."
"Hey Wade." Said Caleb, with sadness in his voice.
"Ummmm... Caleb... Are you okay? You seem really sad... What's wrong?" Asked Wade, very concerned.
"Well... My mom.... She found out... About... Us." Said Caleb.
"What!? How?!", asked Wade, "is she okay with it?"
"Well," explained Caleb, "last night, when we were together, I didn't realize that you left marks on my neck. She saw them. I had to explain it all. At first she thought I was lying. Then she got mad. She hates me. She told me to leave... To go somewhere else."
"Oh my gosh," said Wade, "I'm at my old house packing, I'll be there in five minutes."
Caleb hangs up. Waiting for Wade, he grabs his stuff, and waits outside for Wade to come. As he is waiting, he hears his mom stomping around the house in fury. About seven minutes later, Wade arrives at Caleb's house. Wade runs up to Caleb, gives him a big hug, then slowly starts kissing his neck.
"Caleb, babe, I'm so sorry. This is insane. But baby, you can come live with me. Everything is going to be okay." Said Wade.
Without saying a word, Caleb walks over to Wade's car, puts his bags in the back seat, and sits in the front seat, waiting for Wade to take him home. Through about half the car ride, they were silent. They were scared, afraid, upset. Finally, Wade broke the silence.
"Caleb, baby, I'm sorry. I know it hurts, but everything will be okay. This is just another part of life. Everyone has struggles. But we can overcome this," Said Wade, "we will get through this together, I promise."
