"Oh my god, is this..."
"Yep. It's Steve," Heath said, as he scanned the lake.
The ripples in the water began to dissipate. The anchored boats clanged against one another as an eerie haze descended on the lake area. The hairs on Heath's meaty arm stood up, when an unearthly breeze, like the breath of death, blew across his face. He raised his gun, ready to shoot anything that moved. Reece reached into his pocket to see if he had a signal and he had no bars as expected.
"Something's out there," Heath whispered as the sound of crunching metal and shattering glass came from the parking lot.
"Oh no! My truck!" Isaac shouted, as he ran towards the sound.
"What the hell is going on?!" Heath shouted.
He followed the other men to the parking lot where Isaac's truck had been smashed from the front to the back; as if sliced down the middle with a large knife. Reece stopped running when he saw something long, something slimy, slithering its way to the line of trees adjacent to the lake. The men were puzzled by the sight as Isaac was parked too far from the trees for it to have been fallen timber.
"How did this happen?" Isaac continued to shout; putting his hands on his head in despair.
"See Grandpa! I told you I saw something!" Reece shouted.
"Dammit, boy! Don't start with that again!"
"Then how do you explain Isaac's truck? And look, it's covered by the same slime that was all over me!" Reece retorted.
Upon further inspection, Isaac and Jim saw that Reece was telling the truth. A trail of frothy, red goo was seen going from the truck to the tree line.
"Reece, what did you see?" Isaac asked him.
"I don't know. Something long, something slimy. Almost like a snake or tail," he answered.
"Yeah, but snakes aren't slimy. And they definitely don't leave goo trails," Isaac said when there was a large splash in the water.
"We have to get the hell out of here! Now!" Heath shouted as he started up the hill.
"Whatever it is, we need to leave it to its business. I'm right behind you Saunders!" Isaac said.
"Come on. I've been fishing at this lake for six decades! Ever since I was ten years old! In all of my life there has never been anything out here to be afraid of," Jim said.
"Me too Jim. We've been fishing buddies since we moved up here after the war. But you can't dismiss the fact that there's something strange going on here. Look at my truck. Look at Reece. Plus, they just found a body last week; a few feet from where we're standing. Now, I'm not saying that is a monster, but something's going on here," Isaac said.
"Well, if you two want to go, take the keys and go. Come back and get me at 8:00!" Jim shouted angrily.
He slammed the keys in Isaac's hand and stomped off. Isaac and Reece looked at each other strangely, wishing Jim would change his mind. Jim however, shuffled his way to the edge of the lake and loaded the boat. Reece sighed and Isaac looked down at the keys.
"He's about as stubborn as an old goat," Isaac said.
"I know. But that isn't a good quality to have if a lake monster is around," Reece said, walking towards the boat.
Jim mumbled as he began to remove the anchors from the boat when suddenly he began to scream as something long, something slimy, wrapped around his body. Jim fell to the ground as he fought to free himself, but the harder he struggled, the tighter it gripped him.
"Grandpa!" Reece shouted as he ran as fast as he could to the boat.
Heath could hear Jim in the distance and decided to turn back. Jim's screams were suddenly silenced, his clawing arms became limp, his face blue from suffocation. Reece reached the boat just as Jim was being pulled into the water.
"No! Grandpa!" Reece shouted, as he leaped towards him, planting his face on the ground.
Isaac watched in disbelief; frozen and afraid, unsure of what to do. Reece cried and threw off his shirt, jumping into the lake for Jim.
"No! Reece! Don't go!" Isaac shouted.
He ran over to the now silent, dark waters, unable to see anything. He leaned over yelling for the Napiers, but he was met with silence.
"What happened?" Heath asked him, heavy-winded from the run.
"I don't know. Something reached out and grabbed Jim, and pulled him into the water. Then Reece jumped in after him."
Heath cocked his gun as he watched the water bubbles disappear. He pointed to the water, ready for anything.
"You can't shoot them!"
"I'm not trying to, but what else am I supposed to do?!?" Heath yelled back.
"We need to go and get the proper authorities. There isn't shit we can do about a lake monster!" Isaac shouted.
Isaac reached for Jim's gun that was lying on the sand and headed towards the truck. The waters began to bubble and Isaac turned to see what was happening.
"Hey, Isaac! Something's happening!" Heath shouted.
Isaac stayed in the distance as Heath took a step closer.
"What are you doing?"
"Jim could be asking for help," Heath replied.
"Reece? Is that you?" Isaac asked, when the two Napier men were thrown out of the water.
Their bodies went several feet into the air and neither man made a sound. They fell with a thud. The impact sounded like a hundred pounds of raw beef roasts, their bones cracking as the bodies hit the sand.
"Jimmy!" Isaac yelled as he ran towards the exanimate bodies.
Jim didn't move, and as Isaac turnedhim over on his back, he gasped at what he saw. Jim's face was frozen andcontorted. His mouth had been stretched, his tongue missing and his eyes pulledfrom their sockets. Heath flipped Reece over and thankfully to him, he wasalive, but barely. He struggled to blink his eyes or make a sound as he pointedtoward the lake.
