Izuku tossed and turned all night long, anticipating the call from Katsuki in the morning. It felt silly, trivial really, that Izuku was so worked up like this. The entire affair had him feeling like he did in high school, when he developed his first crush.
Izuku slowly dozed off once more, as the sun began to rise over the sea.
。。。
The laptop's screen was frozen for a moment, until it fully connected and an image of Katsuki was displayed. Granted, it was blurry and not the highest quality, but it was the best they'd get with Katsuki's poor internet connection.
"How'd you sleep? How's everything going? I want to hear about all of it" Izuku beamed. He rocked back and forth on their bed, sitting with his legs locked. Katsuki smiled and repositioned himself in his office chair. The walls were beige and the light looked artificially bright, at least from what Izuku could tell.
"I'm incredibly tired and sore from the first day and a half from training, but overall doing really well. I can't wait to kick some commie asses! We're gonna show them what's what, and take back what's ours". There was a determination in his eyes and while it felt cute on the surface level, Izuku cringed a little.
He sighed, and looked away for a moment. "You make me nervous when you say things like that. Also, you know it's more politically complicated. Half of the soldiers don't even want to be fighting and the statistics say...." Izuku rambled on, convicted on getting it through Katsuki's skull, but most of the time it didn't. At least not with semantical subjects like this.
When Izuku finally closed his computer, it was two in the afternoon and his persistent stomach reminded him that he'd forgotten to eat.
。。。
The front door shut with a nearly silent click.
And then the house was silent.
Izuku brought in the paper grocery bags and proceeded to play some music while he put the food away. It was quiet, but it had slowly become the normal the past few days. Everything seemed oddly normal, although completely different.
His bed was probably the biggest change. It felt too big, and the world too small. It was colder as well, as he was used to Katsuki being a sleeping furnace the entire night. What used to make him sweat early in their marriage was now gone and he was left trembling in the middle of the night.
And his voice, god, his booming voice. Katsuki's syrupy sweet voice. The yells and laughter and quiet mumbles in the middle of the night. It had caused Izuku to be acutely aware of every noise, and it was causing the slightest paranoia. He was just a small guy, alone, without anyone to make sure he was safe and sound.
Izuku kept out a few items for dinner as the music continued to spread throughout the house, note after note reaching the farthest corners. The living room, bathroom, living room, and office heard the echo of 80s psychedelic rock and modern pop as the sizzling of the microwave could be heard in the kitchen.
This was Izuku's new normal, as normal as it could be.
。。。
The doorbell rang its familiar chime and Izuku lazily walked to the door with his morning coffee. He shortly looked around through the peephole and saw that a small package had arrived.
The freckled boy set his coffee on the entrance table and opened the door with a soft click. He inspected the package and beamed when he read the return address.
It was from Katsuki, but had special instructions attached. 'Do NOT open this until our next call, I promise it's worth it, and I'll probably need to explain it to your dumbass anyways".
Izuku grinned sheepishly, his heart soaring so high it nearly burst from his ribcage.
So that's what he did. And the package sat at their entrance table until the next call, a call that couldn't seem to come soon enough for either of them.
