After finishing the movie, we just sat there on my bed thinking.
After a few minutes, I finally broke the silence.
"Hey Aaron?"
"Yeah K?"
"Are you okay?" I asked him seriously.
I needed to know because he was really close to his aunt and now that she was gone, everything would be different. He went to visit her every year in the summer for 2 weeks after we went to our beach house in North Carolina. He was also gone for about a year, so something else could be wrong. I wanted to know if something was wrong, so that I could help him through it. I didn't want this to change him.
"Uh... Yeah. I'm fine." He said.
I could hear that he wasn't telling the truth. I knew what his voice was like when he was lying or when he didn't want to show what he was truly feeling.
"Aaron, don't lie to me."
"How do you always know when I'm lying?" He asked, pretty much giving up on even trying keeping his act up.
"I'm your best friend Aaron. I've known you since we were 5 years old. I think I know you more than anyone in this world."
He sighed and finally decided that he had to tell me the truth.
"I just can't believe that she is gone." Obviously referring to Sarah.
"I know. Me neither. At least she lived a full life. I mean who else can say that they've lived in twelve different countries by the time they are twenty-eight? She had an incredible life and maybe the world had a purpose for her leaving. Everything happens for a reason. Whether you believe it or not."
I had to say, she really did live a wonderful life. I have always dreamed of doing everything she actually did. Not only was she so selfless, but she was adventurous and never said no to something completely insane. She was fearless and carefree which is what made her, Sarah.
He started to speak which brought me out of my thoughts.
"I know. It's just so different without her here. I mean I would visit her every single year of my life and she would come here to visit often too. She was so important to me and she just really understood me. I'm just not sure how to deal with this."
"I'm serious Aaron, If you need anything, I'm here. I understand what you're feeling." I would be there for him no matter what. I loved him. More than he knows, but if he needs a friend to lean on, he can always come to me. I'd rather be just friends than nothing at all.
"I know. Now can you help me finish these M&M's? I'll tell you all about Paris?" He offered.
"Alright, well I can't say no to food and Paris!" I smiled at him excitedly.
He laughed and then said "Of course."
For hours we just talked about where he went in France and completely avoided the topic of his aunt. It was nice. I missed these long talks we would have at night. I started to get very tired and could feel my eyes start to get heavy.
"Aaron, can we get some sleep?" I asked while yawning.
"That's probably a good idea. I'm exhausted from travelling all day."
"Okay, I'm going to get ready for bed in the bathroom. I put your suitcase in the corner over there." I said while pointing to the corner of my room where his giant red suitcase sat.
I walked over to my dresser and got a pair of grey sweatpants and a plain white t-shirt. I walked into the bathroom and closed the door behind me. I quickly changed, brushed my teeth and then washed my face. I walked out of the bathroom and yawned. I really was tired.
"Katia?" questioned Aaron.
"Since when do you call me that?" I asked.
He never really called me by my first name, only my nickname that he made me, K. The only time he ever used my name was when we had serious talks or he was making fun of me.
Aaron gazed intently at me. Okay, now I was feeling uncomfortable.
"Since when do you have that shirt?"
I looked down and realized this was Aaron's shirt. I had stolen it from him a while back. I think it was only about a week before he left. I didn't bring any clothes to wear to bed that time we stayed over at the Carson's house, so he let me borrow a pair of his black sweatpants and this t-shirt, that is obviously pretty big on me. I forgot to give them back to him in the morning and I didn't see them after that until now, so I kept them.
"Well, you let me borrow it once and I didnt feel like giving it back, so here it is." I said while giving him a huge grin since i really didn't want to give it back to him.
"You stole it? Is Katia turning bad? How is this possible?"
He gave me this incredibly exagerated surprised expression.
"Oh shut up! I'm not giving it back."
"Um... yes you are."
"No, I'm not."
"Yes, you are."
"No, I'm not."
"Yes!"
"No!"
He groaned "Fine! Keep the shirt!"
I smiled in victory and went to lay down in my bed. Aaron had fallen asleep almost right after he layed his head on the pillow. I stared at him for a couple seconds. I still couldn't believe he was here. I hope he stayed for a while. Sleep then took over me.
