The pain was excruciating, almost unbearable. Adella knew she was near the end and it would be all over in just a matter of minutes. One last push and Adella felt the baby's head emerge. She reached down as she put the last of her energy into the final push and with that her baby girl was born.

Adella gazed down at the baby girl expecting to feel a rush of love and motherly instincts take over, but those feelings had already been buried. The baby let out her first cry but was quickly comforted with the pacifier that Adella offered. In a matter of minutes Adella cleaned the baby up as best she could, wrapped her up in a motel towel, and cleaned herself up. Before leaving the motel, Adella made sure to leave no evidence or fingerprints behind.

The next step had been planned months in advance and the Safe Haven baby drop was a block away at the firehouse. Adella hurried down the dark sidewalk, the baby girl asleep inside the thrift shop black duffle bag Adella had bought just a week ago. The early hour of the spring morning guaranteed that the street would be quiet and empty of witnesses.

Adella slowly approached the firehouse door that was engulfed in red from the bulb above the door frame and pulled the backpack off and set it down gently on the doormat. She unzipped the bag and took one last look at her sleeping child, knowing the next time she would see her she would be grown. Adella repeated a string of words that could only be heard by those who could understand them and pinned a paper with only the name "Coraline" on it. The sleeping child contently sucked on the pacifier with rhythmic movements totally unaware of the present moment, decisions being made, and that her life held secrets to be revealed over time. Adella knew that giving the baby girl up was the only option for Adella's life and her world was not for any child to grow up in. Adella knew that by giving her up, she was giving this innocent child a chance at growing up in a normal world, a world that would hopefully accept this special child until it was time.
