Brother had come to the party, not alone though, but with two arm candies in tow, and they couldn't have been more contrasting. The one by his brother's arm looked like he was just seconds away from waving his hand to the public, as though he had come to his coronation, while the other one who was hiding behind his brother must have been contemplating the life mistakes that had led him to this exact moment, for he was trying so hard to make himself invisible behind Lan Xichen.
Across the room, his eyes met with his brother's, and Lan Xichen began to walk towards him along with those other two. Nervous, Lan Wangji glanced at his sides, only to notice that his uncle and Nie Mingjue, both traitors, had long disappeared from his side.
"Wangji! How are you? I am sorry I couldn't pick you up from the airport," Lan Xichen said apologetically.
"Brother has a very busy schedule. I understand. No need to apologize," Lan Wangji replied.
Lan Xichen smiled at that. Then, as if he remembered something very important, he said,
"Wangji! This is Mo Xuanyu and this is Wei Ying,"
Lan Wangji attention was so one-sidedly focused on his brother that he had not had a moment to take a good look at those two people by his brother's side. When he heard his brother utter Wei Ying, Lan Wangji snapped his head to look in the direction of the person.
The person was indeed his Wei Ying. His pretty Wei Ying. Mo Xuanyu was pretty- no doubt about it-but Wei Ying's beauty was unparalleled. Wei Ying was pretty with a good body. But what set him apart from others, making his beauty otherwordly, were his intelligent eyes, enchanting smile, mirthful laughter and the warmth he radiated.
Lan Wangji's heart started beating frantically across his rib cage, and the air froze in his lunges. He felt dizzy all of the sudden.
Lan Wangji couldn't hear anything else; he could only hear ringing in his ears. He felt dazed, completely disconnected from his surrounding. His gaze had remained frozen on Wei Ying, and Wei Ying also had not looked anywhere else but at him.
But Wei Ying's gaze wasn't gleaming with recognition. He exuded an air of indifference, as though he couldn't care less about Lan Wangji.
"Wangji,"
Lan Wangji was in trance, but it was broken by his brother's voice calling him. Lan Xichen's right arm was wrapped around Mo Xuanyu's waist, but abruptly, he let go of that right arm to drape his left arm around Wei Ying's shoulder instead- the whole thing looked like a picture of possessiveness.
At that, Wei Ying snapped his head to look at Lan Xichen, his eyes were wide open in shock, and he looked uncomfortable.
Wei Ying squirmed and pried himself out of Lan Xichen's arm.
"I want to go get a drink," Wei Ying said. Then, he left without waiting for a response.
Lan Wangji followed the boy of his dreams with his gaze as he slowly disappeared among the crowd.
"Daddy, can I go get a drink too?" the annoying one spoke.
"Yes, princess,"
Finally, it was just him and his brother, an uncomfortable silence hanging between them. Lan Wangji's mind was still trying to catch up with reality.
"Wangji, let's go and make an announcement first, shall we?" Lan Xichen spoke first.
The announcement ended quickly but was followed by the lengthy process of people congratulating him. He was having difficulty standing still, his mind wandering somewhere far away, and his eyes darting across the room to find the one his heart had longed for so long.
