song-living hell by bella poarch

Mark sat up in bed, his heart racing, trying to recollect why he felt so disturbed and troubled. Then it all came flashing back to him- the argument with Father last night, the glass shattering on his face and cutting right through his eyebrow, the anger and the humiliation of lying down on the drawing room floor-

Yes.

Today was the day that Mark would meet the girl his parents had arranged for him to marry. He didn't even know her name, let alone ever seen her face. He was not looking forward to meeting her, not only because she was a stranger, but because he was being forced into it. He was being made to play another part of his parents' game, all at the cost of his pain and humiliation.

Mark's family were the Angel Mafias, awful criminals who stole, cheated and lied to get whatever they wanted. To be honest, even the police were scared of them. Fully aware of their status in society, they produced more and more children to keep the steady income of stolen goods coming in.

Mark's brothers, Taeyong, Yuta, Jaehyun, Johnny, Doyoung, Haechan, Jungwoo, and Taeil had successfully inaugurated themselves into the thug life. Taeyong, Jaehyun and Taeil were already married with ten kids between them; Haechan and Yuta were engaged; and Johnny and Doyoung had already taken over successful criminal operations.

Mark felt like a total outsider to the family: he had never agreed with the principles that their father told them that stealing and killing was okay. He felt ashamed of his rich clothes and toys and bedroom, all acquired from stolen money. He wished he could be a normal citizen and be able to get married to the girl (or boy) that he wanted, and live a life that was free of other people's struggles and blood.

Mark slouched off to his en suite bathroom, a fine room with green and gold marble on the walls and a black stone bath. There was an electric fireplace and a woollen white rug, and soft white flannels and towels on the oak shelving unit. Mark ignored all of these and peered in the mirror at his wound.

It was a huge gash running through his eyebrow, just missing his eye and avoiding damage. Crusted blood surrounded it, a slight bruise forming above. Mark knew that although it needed cleaning, it would hurt like billy-o and probably start bleeding again. He turned on the bath tap and undressed as the water filled the tub.

It was from yesterday, when he and his father had argued about Mark's arranged wife. "I don't even like her!" Mark had shouted.  His father, a harsh, unkind man, had rose from his desk and pointed his burning cigarette in Mark's direction. "That does not matter, Mark. We need heirs, and the only way is to marry that girl and produce children!"
Mark had stepped back in disgust. "So that's the only reason you want me to get married? It was never really about me, was it, dad? It was all about what I can produce. I'm just a cash crop to you." His father had picked up the wine glass on the desk and smashed it on Mark's face, knocking Mark down to the floor and causing him to briefly pass out, while his father stood above him laughing.

It was really happening, Mark thought as he sank down to neck in the bathtub. He was really going to meet this girl that he was going to marry. He betted that his parents had picked out an ugly girl- Taeyong's wife had buck teeth and freckles- and she would probably be daft-he'd seen Jaehyun's wife struggle to read a story book to their little son.

Mark dried himself off with a towel. Of course, Jungwoo and Johnny were already knee deep into the culture without marriage, but while he and his brothers had been taught the art of knives and weapons from a young age, Mark had managed to steer clear of any real crime.

But now, if he was a married man, he would have to prove to his wife that he was a true Angel Mafia member...and he would have to step into the first taste of blood, sweat and tears. He felt frightened and scared. He didn't want anything to do with it.
