Trigger warning- violence and murder

song- frost by txt

"Any more questions?" The landlady stood smiling like she'd chewed a wasp, a bit of lipstick showing on her teeth, face caked with foundation. Yeonjun snapped out of his daydream as he found her staring impatiently.

"Erm- yes- I mean, no. Um...thank you. I can sort myself out from here." He gave her an equally fake smile as he walked her through the small apartment and out of the front door, shutting the door firmly behind her. Once he'd locked the door, he exhaled loudly as he slid down the door into a sitting position.

The last few hours had been an absolute nightmare for him. He, his father, his uncle, and cousin Seungkwan had gone out on their motorbikes to stage an elaborately planned bank robbery, but they had not reckoned with the security guards on standby and so had managed to get the police on their trail.

It had lasted for around eight minutes, with police horns blaring, people shouting, and streetlights whirring by. Just when it seemed that they had escaped, Seungkwan skidded and landed heavily on the ground, his motorcycle on top of him, and his father and uncle stopped to help him. Instead of joining in the help, Yeonjun had sped off, leaving the three crewmates to arrest by the police.

Only when he had stopped in a dark alley to take a breath, Yeonjun realised what he had done. He had violated one of the Devil Mafia Rules- he had been a coward and a snitch. Shame had covered his heart as he realised he wouldn't be able to return home without everyone finding out what he had done...and being punished heavily.

Waiting until early morning, he'd risked everything and returned to his house where he and his four younger brothers- Soobin, Beomgyu, Taehyun and Kai- lived with their parents, entered his room and taken everything he would possibly need- his weaponry, clothes, and toiletry.

As he was mounting his motorcycle, ready to leave, he'd heard a shout from the house.

He had left his part of Gangnam and gone into a quieter part of the surburb where, with a face mask to cover his identity, had gone to the nearest hostel and rented the available apartment as soon as possible.

Now he was sat here, with nobody to confide in, nobody to turn to, and nobody to help him. He had let the Devil Mafia down badly, and he knew that he could never go back. Every minute that passed without his return would make the punishment harsher. It looked like he would have to make this hostel his new life.

But he felt lost. The Mafia had given him a sense of identity and self. He felt complete when he took part in bashing windows open and terrorising residents. He felt like half of him had been torn away.

He felt so lost.

To distract his thoughts, Yeonjun walked around the apartment. It was nice and clean, with a shared kitchen and living room, a sparkly white bathroom, and a large bedroom with two beds. Yeonjun flopped on the one closest to the window as he tried to think about what had gone wrong.

He didn't like this small poky house. It was a loud change from the mansion that he'd grown up in and loved, and it felt so out of place that he had to be here in a flat that didn't even belong to his rich family. He almost wanted to return home and accept the punishment waiting for him, but he'd already deposited the first rent for the flat and it would seem suspicious if he suddenly left.

He wanted to believe that he was brave, that things would be alright, but the more he attempted to reassure himself, the more he felt like he was very alone. He turned his head away into the pillow to try and stop himself from crying, but the tears wouldn't stop.
