It was raining.
Pleasantly so. The kind of rain that you could dance in. Walk in. Use as background noise, while you read quietly. It wasn't too light that it bordered on drizzle or so heavy that you could barely hear your own thoughts.
It was raining.
Of course it was.
It couldn't possibly be the epic love story of my rather average life, if the weather wasn't memorable.
I loved the scent and feel of the rain.
One of the perks of being unemployed was that I had nowhere to be. I could tell by how soaked my clothes were that I had lost track of time again.
The usual.
I only cared when the rain came down, especially hard, since I was sure that most beings didn't like the sensation of being assaulted by water.
I made my way to the well-known family owned supermarket. The husband? An ork and the wife? A siren.
I know!
I know!
I'm not one to be racist, but that was a one of a kind pairing. The poor guy was especially shy when his wife doted on him. Like the rest of us, he too had been in sheer disbelief that someone as ethereal as her was actually in love with him.
But like that one movie once said 'You can see it in the eyes.' She was crazy about him and him? He was over the moon to even be allowed near her.
It was bittersweet. In how I loved their union and how devoted they were to each other, while feeling slightly lonely, possibly envious, since I had been an adult for a notable amount of time and had yet to have even a crush.
Their daughter Marilla. I... between us didn't know what she'd look like. However, my jaw couldn't have dropped lower when I found out that they could reproduce.
The gods really had their favorites.
Marilla handed me a towel and shopping basket once I walked past the sliding doors of their establishment.
I'm not sure what she was, but she was beautiful. She was tall like her parents. She had a pink hue to her skin, but either than that, her mother's genes had definitely dominated that battle.
'Rain dancing again?' she joked, and I smiled.
'Naturally, I could never miss a date with the love of my life,' I replied cheekily.
I placed the towel on my head and looked for some things I was running low on and snacks. Once at the counter, Kihla beamed at me from behind her blushing husband as she hugged him.
'Hello there Ophilia, soaking wet as always,' she said, and I laughed.
'The bigger surprise would be if it rained less in this nameless city,' I said. She nodded with a thoughtful look on her face, as if pondering on it, then deciding it wasn't worth it before she disappeared behind her husband.
'Thank you for shopping with us,' the giant and gentle Jonathan said shyly with a smile as he handed me my change and bagged goods.
I smiled back and left my damp towel with Marila at the door.
The rain?
It was still pretty aggressive.
So, I took the scenic route while using the canopies of businesses as shelter. I had some change, so I got some sunflowers from Agatha who was, of course, a witch because how else could sunflowers thrive in a rainy city that barely knew of the sun?
I found my way to a bus terminal and sat at the bus stop. I placed my shopping next to me while I sniffed the sunflowers. I brought my knees to my chest and just enjoyed the company of the rain.
You'd imagine my surprise when the bus shelter rattled violently as the rain softened. As I'm sure, it would be a normal reaction for anyone; my soul nearly jumped out of my skin.
