I'm Falling

I'm falling. It was painful, but now it's just dark. Dark and quiet. I can faintly hear wind rushing past my ears, but it's muffled by my thoughts.

Am I dead?

Is death real?

What happens after?

Is this it? All I get? Dark?

I curl myself into a ball and the wind buffets me. After a long time my arms get sore and I straighten out.

There is no sense of time in this place. My eyes are squeezed shut.

Just let me die! I think. But how ironic. Here I am already dead and wishing for death a second time. All I remember is sitting in the car.

Gentle fingers peel my eyelids back but I am blinded. I almost scream, but a soft hand clamps my mouth shut. A voice as old as time flows like water through all the places in me that I had forgotten.

"This is no place for the likes of you, my child."
"You see but do not comprehend, listen but do not hear."
"If you believe you can, you will."

Stop speaking in these stupid metaphors, I think, but I take the voice's advice and become aware of soft, tickly things surrounding me. Some are getting in my mouth.

I strain to take the voice's advice, to see and hear beyond. It's harder than you might think. But Eventually- I can see! Really see this time!

All this time, when I thought I was falling. I wasn't. I was flying.

The moment of death is wonderful and warm and bright. Like sitting on an old corrugated iron roof and staring at the sun. Staring, till all you can see is a halo of light.

That's all I'm allowed to tell you. The rest you'll have to find out for yourself.
