"here you go." I said as I reached to give John his coffee. He was busy typing on his computer, his eyes glued to the screen, not even giving me a glance. His desk was messy, papers stacked everywhere in no particular order. Pencils, pens, note cards and other small things were scattered all over the wooden surface. It looked like a tornado had come through, but only hit his area. All the other desks and offices were neat, the papers filed and everything else put away.
The police office was completely empty, except for the chief who was still in his office and a few night patrollers in the break room next door. It was erie, having the station deathly silent, only hearing the click of John's fingers on his keyboard. I sighed as I watched him work. He'd been working late a lot, trying to catch up on work and get ahead.
"ehem." I cleared my throat, but got no response. "JOHN!" I yelled and he looked over.
"oh, Teagan." he said and then looked at the coffee and I saw relief spread over his face. "Thank you."
He took it from me and inhaled deeply. "Just what I needed." he sighed contentedly and took a sip. I rested my hip on the edge of his desk and crossed my arms over my stomach. "What time is it?" he asked and I checked my watch.
"Just past one." I replied and he gaped.
"I'm sorry i kept you so long! You can go home, do you need a ride?" he asked and i shook my head.
"You need to go home John, it's late, you're clearly exhausted." I said as I looked at him, taking in his state. His eyes were watery and bloodshot, he had bags under his eyes and he looked like he was about to pass out.
"I have to finish this and then d..." he started but I quickly interrupted him.
"John, you need to go home, you can't do anything when you're this tired. Go home, sleep and then tomorrow come in late." I said, he sighed and ran his hand over his face.
"alright, I'll drop you home." he said as he reached for his jacket. He stood up and pulled it on, then turned his computer off. "after you." he said and I turned and walked towards the door. He took his coffee and started after me. I held the door for him and he paused and looked behind him at the office.
"come on." I said and he finally turned the light off and shut the door. We walked down to his police car and he got in. I quickly got in and we started driving.
"you must hate me for all these late nights." he chuckled as we drove down the road.
"nah, I don't care as long as there's a kettle on and the TV works." I said and looked ahead at the road.
"Donut?" he asked as he gestured to a box on the floor. I picked up the rectangular pink cardboard and set it In my lap. I opened the lid and looked down. There were a few frosted donuts and I raised my eyebrows.
"how long have these been here?" I asked and he shrugged.
"not long." He replied with a shrug. I picked one up and took a bite. "maybe a week." he said and I gaped at him, mouth full. He laughed and I narrowed my eyes. "I'm just joking kid." he chuckled as I ate it.
"It's not funny." I huffed and crossed my arms. He just laughed as he put on his blinker and went down my driveway. He pulled up in front of my house and parked.
"I'm sorry I kept you so late." He started and I shrugged.
"It's fine, now you go home and get some sleep." I replied and he nodded. I opened up the door and got out. I bent down and looked back at him in the car. "I'm serious John, you've been staying in the office past midnight everyday the past week, you need sleep to function, you're no good to the office when you're exhausted and buzzed up on coffee." I said and he grinned.
