"hi." said a voice and I jumped around, again barely stopping a scream from escaping. "sorry, didn't mean to scare you."

I saw what I assumed was a man leaning against a tree in the dark. He was standing in the shadows so the only thing i could see were His blue jeans and a sweatshirt, which seemed to light for the cold weather we'd been having.

"I didn't expect you to arrive to soon." I said, assuming he was backup. "you must be from the new unit over in canaan."

He nodded in agreement, but didn't say anything. Silence set in and I shivered and rubbed my arms. "so, how's the new unit doing?" I asked just trying to distract myself from what had just happened inside the house.

"names Hunter...Hunter Conaway." he said, not answering my question as he held his hand out. I started to reach out and shake his hand but when I saw my hand was stained red. I stopped dead and stared at it wide eyed.

"Sorry I...I have blood on my hands." I apologized in a weak voice and he raised his eyebrows.

"you must be freezing." he said and he pulled off his sweatshirt and held it out to me. I just looked at it. He pushed off the tree and walked behind me. He draped the grey sweatshirt over my shoulders and he rested his hands on my shoulder for a few seconds before he pulled away and I looked at him.

"thank you mr.conaway." I said and he gave me a cheeky grin.

"Please, call me Hunter." he said with a warm smile and I returned it when I nodded. "Come on, its dark over here." he added and We started walking towards the house. As we approached the house I could see better as light was bathed over the house. All the lights were off except for one light down in the basement. The real light was coming from the headlights of Johns patrol car which were still on and pointed Right towards the house.

I looked over at Hunter, now that it was lighter I could actually see him. His face was well defined and I'd pin his age as close to mine, maybe twenty eight. His black hair was longer than most police officer's, but not long enough that he could put it behind his ears. His bangs fell slightly into his face, but he managed to not let them cover his eyes.

His blue jeans had dirt on them and the knees were ripped out, but I couldn't tell if they were made like that or he'd fallen. I looked back up to his face and saw he was looking at me. His eyes were a bright green, like the leaves on trees at the end of spring when they are in full bloom. He had a twisted grin on his face, almost a smirk, but he managed to make it look playful. He raised his eyebrows and I blushed and looked away from him cause he'd caught me staring.

I waited a few seconds then looked back up at his face and saw he was looking foreword again. I watched him in silence for a few more moments, just trying to get a feel for him.

"that must have rattled you, that man I mean." said hunter, finally breaking the silence and I nodded and shivered thinking about it. I pulled his jacket tighter around me which was already warm from being on him. "And I'm assuming by how scared you are right now, you aren't a police officer."

We'd reached John's car at this point and I leaned against the door. "you're right, I'm not a police officer, I've been taking an internship with the police for nearly six years. I'm graduating collage in a little while." I replied, then for some reason I wanted to tell him the truth about how scared I was. I was good at hiding my fear and emotions from people, but right now I wanted him to know. "It did rattle me, I don't think I've ever been that scared in my life." I whispered and he nodded gravely, which led me to believe he wanted me to continue. "He was so cold, I thought he was dead, but...but then he spoke to me." I saw surprise flash in Hunter's eyes as I said that, then concern.
