01.

the water was freezing cold in the middle of july. jia's teeth were chattering. the coldness was seeping in her bones, but the sun was bright — warm on her hair, and cheekbones. she stood still in the water, legs fluttering and arms moving, eyes fixated on the two boys in a distance. their laughter was loud enough to reach her. she was perplexed, but she was just as much confused.

was what she saw real, or was it, as her mother said, just a fleeting illusion?

she broke off the gaze when one of the boys looked over at her, his bright grin slowly letting go, as he took in the view of the sparkling water, with a girl in between of nowhere. it was bizarre. wasn't that the site where they were always getting chased away by the guards patrolling the water?

he had grown up in the village with generation old tales that were handed from one person to the next. the lake was known as the "graveyard of red". it was enough to bring a row of goosebumps over his neck. he looked down at taehyun who just got out of the water to stand on the rocks beside him. he had a scowl rubbed on his face.

"what happened?"

taehyun didn't say much. he pulled his shorts up, exposing a fresh cut on his thigh. yeonjun winced at the flowing blood.

"what? how did that happen?" he came closer to look at the fresh wound. he didn't dare to touch it.

"i don't know. something stung me in the water. as if a knife was pushed in my skin." taehyun pulled the white towel from his bag and pushed it against his leg. yeonjun was too lost to say much. he looked back at the girl who was in the water.

she was gone.

he felt something dark loom inside him.
