summer had taken a toll on jia's mind. too much of the sun had melted her thoughts into one final form of a vomit that made its home in her skull.

she sat on the drier side of the beach, looking further into the water and what evil it jewelled through its beauty. the lake always filled her with a serene dream like peace. it didn't make sense. she scoffed, hands clutching at the morning newspaper that she had stolen from the carriage bike of yeonjun's while she walked on her way towards the lake.

he hadn't realised it until much later when his mother had enquired about it, and he had lost all track of what he had done with it.

in the chest of the newspaper jia had read. "murder in a forgotten town draws curious visitors." she loathed it then and there. she wished for the ferry carrying the people to drown.

taehyun was on his way to the temple with some offerings. his footsteps came to a stop when he caught the silhouette of jia. the mossy wind danced through her hair and her flowy dress. she was staking flat rocks on each other, deep in thought. taehyun walked further, his boots crushing the gravel. "good morning."

jia looked up, eyes blinded by the brilliant sun that now taehyun cut off by a stretched hand. "hey." her voice was drowned by a sudden crash that startled both of them.

"holy shit." taehyun's eyes darted to the road, where a jeep had crashed into a pole and now was emitting smoke. jia felt her heart plummet somewhere deep. both the teens acknowledged each other's thoughts and sprinted towards the vehicle. ominous crows started cawing.

jia coughed at the smoke that filled her lungs. she squinted, trying to look through the glass.

"there's no one here."

"where did they go?" taehyun looked as though he had seen a ghost, or a lack of it. jia couldn't form an answer.

"where's yeonjun?" jia asked out of nowhere. taehyun gave her an annoyed look that she thought was unnecessary.

"what does he have to do with any of this? you go home. i'll call someone."

jia stood her ground as the boy started searching for something in his outdated phone.

"jia."

"huh?" jia looked around. "did you say something?"

taehyun's face answered her. he pressed the phone against his ear. "hello? yeah, yeah. there's been a car crash near the tunnel ending. yes. no one is hurt. well. . . it's complicated i'll explain it soon. okay."

taehyun pushed the phone in his pocket. "you were saying something?" his head jerked up and all he saw was empty mist.

jia had silently taken the forest route that led to the voice.
