Everyone had been working on the bridge for a total of thirty five days, it was coming along nicely. in that time, estella, louise, ruby and henry had been the helping hand in refreshments for the hard working people that were busting their asses to fix the bridge. they mostly just carried around water and food, but they needed water and food to continue, so in their heads, they were doing a job that needed doing. they felt important, like they were actually helping.
estella had been doing very well since she had her talk with daryl. she was no longer back chatting, or doing anything she wasn't supposed to. it was like she was the old estella again, but just very brave, and a lot stronger than she used to be.
they were currently stood outside of henry king ezekiel's tent as he tied up henry's shoe laces, and they all waited for him. he told them that if they didn't wait for him then he'd have to chase them all around the camp to find them. they had been told off a couple of days ago for running around and almost squishing ruby with a large plank of wood that rick dropped, so they weren't allowed to play tag anymore.
"you should be proud, children. the work you've done here, some day you'll cross this bridge with your grand children, and tell them the story of how it was built." ezekiel said, proudly.
"i'm not gonna bore my grandkids telling them a story about a bridge." henry said, making louise laugh.
"you're gonna have grandkids?" ruby asked, grossed out.
"everyone is going to have grandchildren at one point or another. you know you can't control it when the stork brings you a baby. it just happens." estella said, making ruby and louise's eyes widen.
"so i could have a baby right now?" louise asked in panic.
"i don't want a baby!" ruby said, taking a step back.
"that is not the way it works, girls. the stork only brings you a baby if you are ready." ezekiel said, chuckling a little.
"even then, i'm not gonna tell my kids about the bridge." henry said, making ezekiel laugh again.
"it's not just a bridge. roads are the lifeblood of civilisation. rome rose and fell with its roads. without this bridge, there would be no trade. bullets from alexandria, grain from hilltop, fish from the oceanside. this boring structure connects us all." ezekiel smiled, patting henry's head. "and henry, be back in an hour to pack. we are going home."
