PAULA SAT UPRIGHT at her desk, tapping her pen repeatedly as she waited for class to start. Today, she made sure to be completely sober, having learned her lesson from the previous encounter with Chris. She didn't want to embarrass herself in front of him again. Paula was vaguely aware of Chris's existence, but her knowledge of him was solely due to his status as one of the triplets. The entire student body at Somerville High was well acquainted with the Sturniolo triplets, as they were the only set of triplets in the entire school. Paula had seen them in passing through the school's hallways but had never given them much thought or bothered to learn their names. However, that changed when she had the chance to meet Chris face-to-face.
Just as the late bell was about to ring, Chris entered the classroom, making his way to the back of the room where Paula was seated. They had just been officially announced as partners for the upcoming project. Mr. Clifford had made it clear that once partners were chosen, there was no option to change, so they were committed to working together throughout the project.
He slid his backpack off his shoulder and placed it on the floor, greeting Paula with a "Hey". Paula, not wanting to be impolite, responded with a "Hi" of her own before redirecting her focus to the front of the classroom.
Mr. Clifford stood up and walked to the board, clearing his throat to gain the attention of the students. Some of the students followed his cue and turned their attention to him, but others remained focused on their tasks. Despite the mixed response, Mr. Clifford continued with his lesson.
"Hello, class," he began, addressing the students. "I have here the pairs that you all chose, and as you know, there will be no switching. I hope you are all content with your choices." He paused for a moment to let his words sink in before continuing.
