"Hey Cassie", I said, hefting a box of what felt like rocks into our kitchen, "now that we're living together, there's probably something I should tell you". Cassie looked up from the box of glassware she was unpacking across the dormitory.
"What is it?", she asked, her brow furrowing in curiosity. And of course, she would be curious. Cassie and I were like sisters, ever since we met in prep. We were inseparable. I had followed Cassie when we moved up to high school, and she followed me this time, to university. Well, I suppose we followed each other. As a result of that, Cassie and I knew everything about each other. Well, almost everything.
"Since we're living together", I repeated, stalling. I wanted to have this conversation. It would be inevitable now that we were sharing a dorm, and I wanted to be honest and do it right.
"You're bound to find out, so I thought I'd just tell you that...", here it was, my confession. But confessing is never easy, is it?
"I wear diapers, sometimes, recreationally", I said, forcing out and stumbling over the words.
Cassie's jaw dropped. Not much, but I could tell even from the opposite side of the room. Her brows lifted too. We stood there like that for a few moments. I didn't want to say anything, for risk of damaging my position. I wasn't massively concerned, mind you. I mentioned how close Cassie and I are. But still, diapers are massively taboo. Finally, Cassie broke the stalemate.
"Okay", she said, her brow furrowing again, this time in thought. One thing to know about Cassie is that her brow furrows a lot. And it takes some practice to differentiate all of her different furrows. But I've got it nailed.
"Are you okay with me wearing them around you?" I asked. "If you're not comfortable with it, I can wait until I'm alone. That's what I did with my parents", I compromised.
"What? No, I mean yes, of course. You can wear whatever you want around me Julia, it will never bother me. I'm just a little confused", expressed Cassie. Which was fair, even I get confused about it.
"Well," I offered, "I'm happy to answer any questions you have".
"Great", Cassie smiled, "because I have a ton".
We sat down on the couch, our couch, and Cassie fired away question after question. It took almost half an hour to exhaust her curiosity.
"So, do you think I'm weird?" I asked, when Cassie was finally out of questions.
Cassie put a hand on my shoulder. "Julia, I've always known you were weird. But this doesn't make me love you any less."
"Thanks", I smiled in relief, "I'm so lucky to have a friend as accepting as you".
"You weren't worried that I wouldn't accept you were you?" Cassie asked, concerned.
"Maybe a little", I confessed, looking down
"Oh Julia", Cassie gushed, "I will always accept you. Now, why don't you go and put on a diaper if that's what you want".
I froze for a couple of seconds. "You want me to put one on now?" I asked, taken aback by the offer.
"If you want to", Cassie shrugged, "I thought you would".
"No, I mean, yes, I mean, I don't know", I stuttered, disoriented. "I guess I was so concerned about whether you'd be okay with me wearing diapers around you, I didn't consider how I would feel about it.
"That's okay", chuckled Cassie. "Do whatever you want, you know I don't mind".
I nodded. "I'll put one on", I decided after some deliberation.
