The float had shuffled its way away from the parade and now was parked at a private runway. Crates with several birds were being stacked on one another into a cargo plane. (Y/N) screeched like a madman as they pulled her cage into the plane. Away from Blu, away from Nico. The panic had settled into her chest and she was desperate for a way out. After a scuffle with the smugglers and a boy having a sudden change of heart, the plane was loaded and ready for takeoff. Nico's cage was next to (Y/N)'s, and he gently reached his wing through the bars at her.

"Hey baby bird, it's okay." Nico said softly, "We'll be okay."

(Y/N) tearfully looked over at the yellow canary, and touched her wing to his. "Thank you, Nico... for everything."

They stayed like that for a while as the plane roared to life, trying to press closer to each other through the metal bars. The sudden jolt of the plane scraping over something sent the two tumbling back, but the flicker of hope died once they realized the aircraft hadn't been deterred from its flight path. A sad silence settled over the plane as it cruised through the morning sky.

"Sorry Eva, I'm not gonna be home for dinner," Rafael said sorrowfully, and (Y/N) felt a twinge in her heart. There were birds in here that were losing everything, she couldn't imagine the pain Rafael was feeling right now.

Grief turned to curiosity when out of the corner of her eye, (Y/N) spotted Blu trying to hook onto a fire extinguisher with some kind of cord. She blinked in surprise at the contraption her brother was making. "What're you doing?"

"I'm gonna pop this cage open like a soda can," Blu said and began ramming the side of the cage next to the fire extinguisher. It fell and the cord wrenched open Blu's cage with it.

"Now that's poppin!" Nico exclaimed happily as Blu climbed out of his cage. Quickly he opened Jewel and (Y/N)'s cages, and they all began setting the birds free. Nico and (Y/N) knocked over a stack of empty cages in front of the door as a blockade and nodded to Blu for approval. Blu nodded back and opened the hatch door. Sunlight filtered through the opening as Nigel and the smuggler pounded on the barricaded door. An explosion of color filled the sky as birds took flight, a flurry of reds and blues, and greens shining in the morning sun, basking in freedom. Jewel was pulling Blu toward the hatch door, but he skidded to a stop solemnly. (Y/N) was about to take off, but realized the hold up quickly and turned to face them.

"Hey... it's alright." (Y/N) said softly.

"Um... yeah, it's okay. We'll figure this out together, okay?" Jewel reassured him breathlessly. They were so close to freedom, it just took one more leap of faith.

A loud crash made Jewel let out a shriek of alarm, as Nigel tackled Blu to the ground. Manic laughing left the white bird's beak as his sharpened talons gripped at Blu's throat. His cold eyes and evil smirk made (Y/N) see red. "Let him go!"

She sprang forward and dug her talons into his shoulders. Jewel followed close behind, both birds wildly flapping and screeching. Nigel grunted painfully and threw them off, sending (Y/N) head first into the wall and Jewel into a pile of cages, and getting her wing crushed.

"Jewel! (Y/N)"

"Oh pity, now we have three useless, flightless birds." Nigel spat and tightened his grip on the macaw's throat. He was so busy reveling in his glory, Nigel failed to notice the (color) canary pulling the hooked cord attached to the fire extinguisher with all her might. With a heave, she threw it around his talon, catching the white cockatoo's attention.

"Now it's about to be four." She sneered, and Nigel's eyes widened as (Y/N) pulled the extinguisher's pin and sent him flying through the air, and through the window. The flurry of white feathers through the plane propeller made her smile woozily, her head still spinning from the earlier impact.

The pride was short-lived, however, when the plane started going down. The smugglers had abandoned the ship, and the sudden movements caused the crates to shift towards the open hatch, taking Jewel with them. "Blu!"

"No!" Blu cried as Jewel went over the edge, and after a moment of hesitation, he went after her.

(Y/N) tried to follow, but her eyes could scarcely focus. Her ears were still ringing, and she felt unbalanced. She clumsily tumbled out of the plane, and despite the wild flapping of her wings, she couldn't keep herself up. Terror pierced through the foggy haze of her mind, and she knew that she was going to die. She thought of Minnesota, and of hot cocoa, and the smell of books. She thought of the warm sun and the smell of mangos and celebration throughout the streets of Rio. She thought of warm brown eyes, yellow feathers, and a green bottle cap hat that could grab your attention from the other side of the room. And despite the terror, she smiled, because Nico is a wonderful thing to think about.

As she closed her eyes, warm talons gently swooped her up and intercepted her fall. She opened her (color) eyes to see the same warm eyes, sleek yellow feathers, and cheeky bottle cap hat she was thinking about carrying her to safety. "You came back for me..."

"I could never leave you behind baby bird." He said with a warm grin, and the two flew towards the shore. (Y/N) saw two bodies of blue and realized Blu was flying Jewel to safety. She smiled widely and felt tears prick her eyes, he finally did it. Flying alongside great cliffs, passing gondolas in the sky, feeling the wind in her feathers and the warmth of the bird she cared so deeply for, despite the head injury, (Y/N) couldn't have been happier than she was at that moment.

They somehow had a greater stroke of luck and spotted Linda and Tulio down by a broken float. The four birds gently swooped down as Linda cried out in joy. Tulio gently picked Jewel to tend to her injuries, and (Y/N)'s heart swelled with joy at the fact they were home. She shakily supported herself against Nico's body, his scent filling up her senses intoxicatingly. She was safe, they all were. She looked up at Nico, and their eyes met. No words needed to be said, the connection was strong enough to speak for itself. Every fiber in her being was screaming at (Y/N) to lean forward, to officially make him hers. She hesitated but then looked deep into his eyes, and saw that he was looking at her and only her. No one else existed in this moment, it was the two of them alone in this frame of time. She closed the gap between them with a sweet kiss, her (color) feathers pressing up against Nico's yellow ones. The explosion of emotions that ran through her veins was so powerful it almost brought (Y/N) to tears. This was what she wanted. Nico was who she wanted.

Things felt absolutely perfect and absolutely right.
