My hand instinctively reached for the buzzing phone at the end of the desk.
"I need to take this" I whispered before swiping to answer the call.
"Hi"
"Hi, smartie"his voice resonated from the other end
"Kyle" I called out
"Yeah"
"Haven't I asked you not to call me during work hours unless it's important?
"This is important "
A vivid image of his usual sinister smirk popped into my head.
"Can you please get off my phone" I wasn't particularly mad at him; I was simply frustrated by work, Venting out on him has never been a bad idea after all
"I'll drop by the hospital, so we can talk about this favor you've been asking me for
My face lit up with a smile upon hearing him
"OK, I have an appointment to attend to In a few, just a thirty-minute session, You can come in after that, You know my schedule is always tight, so if you don't get here on time, I'm afraid we won't be able to see..."
"Or we can catch up after work " I chipped in
"I have stuff to do too, so I won't be free by then"
"All right, bud. see you soon."
The thud sound revealed that I exerted more energy than necessary while dropping the phone.
Papers were scattered across the large desk, while big notebooks were strewn about in another corner of the room. I squinted my eyes and let out a heavy sigh.
I threw my hands into the air, closed my eyes, and savored the feeling of my muscles stretching out. Just then, my subconscious mind warned me with an enormous yawn that my stomach needed an immediate response."
My eyes welled up from looking at page after page of paperwork for long hours.
Fatigue sometimes tricks me into thinking I should be jobless, but I'm a nerd who loves her professionThe old teak-wood clock on the wall reminds me that I have less than five minutes to tidy up my desk before the patient walks in.
That clock was a gift from my mom, she passed away when I was 7, I don't remember much about her but I do remember that she used to take me to my uncle's place before leaving in a hurry, those soft kisses from her were engraved in my head, at most I remember that my mom was always in a hurry.
By reflex, I picked up the framed picture of my mum that was on the desk and wiped off the particles of dust on it, That was when I realized I hadn't picked up her picture in a while.
I sighed, 'I've been so immersed with work lately, Mum. Your daughter needs all the encouragement she can get, and I know you can hear me from up there',........ I caressed the beautiful face on the picture frame before placing it back on the desk.
I quickly gather the scattered papers into neat piles, making sure the confidential files are securely stored away, then I straighten my chair and take a deep breath to relax my nerves, it's essential to create a welcoming and organized environment for the patients visit
in the file before me were the patient's details. she was having post-traumatic stress disorder from a brain injury called chronic traumatic encephalopathy, she experienced symptoms like emotional detachment, hostility, social isolation, and so on......
As I heard the door click open, my gaze swiftly shifted to it, revealing the face of the patient whose file I had been reviewing a moment ago
She gracefully took her steps toward me with a faint smile on her face.
