"Are you ready?" Sadie's voice came with a light rap at my door; through the mirror, I caught her peeking inside my room.
"Yes," I lied.
No.
"Alright, I'll see you downstairs." She replied gently. Her eyes lingered on mine with unspoken concern before she slowly shut the door, leaving me alone with my thoughts. My hands trembled slightly as I smoothed over the fabric of my dress, the same one I'd buried deep in my closet, hoping never to wear again. The irony twisted inside me like a knife, a constant and cruel reminder of the losses that only kept accumulating.
The black material felt oppressively heavy, like it was already soaked with the gloom of the ceremony ahead. I fiddled with my hair, I'd braided and undone it at least a hundred times this morning. Combing my fingers through it one final time, I settled on leaving it loose. If I couldn't hide under my covers, then I'd use the long brown locks like a veil to shield myself from the piercing stares of strangers armed with halfhearted condolences.
Taking a deep breath, I picked up the small clutch from my dresser and tucked inside my keys and a handkerchief. After a moment of hesitation, I reached for Mom's necklace. The scarlet liquid suspended inside seemed to glow in the daylight. I fiddled with the necklace before slipping the cool metal chain around my neck, concealing the vial beneath the collar of my dress-a silent plea to ward off the day's sorrow.
Gathering the last ounce of strength I could muster, I opened the door to leave my room. Sadie and Taylor were waiting for me at the bottom of the stairs, their faces drawn. We exchanged a silent nod, steeling ourselves against whatever today would bring.
The ride to the cemetery was silent, broken only by the occasional shuffle of our feet or the soft clearing of a throat. Each bump in the road felt like a jolt to my heart, a reminder of the life I once knew slipping further away with every turn.
The car rolled to a stop on the gravel path outside the cemetery, the somber drone of reality settled heavily upon us. Outside the car we were met with a wave of July heat, thick with humidity and the pungent scent of freshly turned earth. Sadie, Taylor, and I made our way towards the gathered mass, each step punctuated by the crunch of gravel underfoot. The sun blazed mercilessly above us, casting a mocking glow on the dark gathering.
The attendees were a blur of black fabric and morose faces. Hushed exchanges from the crowd drifted over me; their tones blending into a dull, sad melody. Each person I met offered a handshake or hug, their words of condolence replaying in my mind until they lost all meaning. Taylor stayed close as we were ushered along a path lined with large oaks to the gravesite, where rows of chairs faced a small podium next to the open grave.
I settled into my seat; my gaze fixed on the polished ebony coffin laid before me. I almost couldn't comprehend that my dad was inside it, as if this were some cruel, elaborate joke, and I half-expected someone to burst out laughing at the absurdity. But no one did.
