Chapter 2
Meadowkit yawned and opened her eyes, to see her brothers play-fighting. Behind her, something yanked her tail. She whirled around, ready to tackle the cat. She bristled. "What ar-" She stopped mid sentence and flattened her fur down. "Sorry, Sunkit." She said to the wide eyed kitten.
"It's ok." Sunkit replied. "I should've told you first." She licked her fur. "Want to play moss-ball?"
"Sure."
"I'll go get the moss." Sunkit raced to her nest and took a little bit of moss, rounding it into a ball. She picked it up. "Want to talk about the gatherings?"
"What about?"
"Well, I overheard father telling mom, 'My kits are apprentices now.' What do you think that means?"
Meadowkit shrugged. "Who knows."
"And I also heard them talking about Driftriver, and how her two kits, Basikit and Brindlekit, were about to be apprentices. Strange, right?"
"Ya............" Meadowkit stared off, but was knocked back to attention when the moss hit her.
"Sorry!!" Sunkit called out.
"It's ok." She grunted.
"But father said he could see a resemblance between me and Roaringkit, and Basilkit and Brindlekit."
"Ok." Meadowkit threw the moss ball to Sunkit, a little harder then meant.
"Ow!!!" Came Roaringkit's cry.
"Sorry!!" Sunkit called out. She glared at Meadowkit. "She didn't mean to. She's probably just got over excited and thinking about the fact she's becoming an apprentice in a moon. Isn't that right, Meadowkit?"
"Uhh......sure. Ya."
"Sooooooo...........................how are you guys?" Roaringkit asked.
"Good." Sunkit smiled triumphantly.
"Meadowkit?"
"Fine." She grumbled. She looked at the ground.
"So......can I join your game?"
"NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" Meadowkit yowled.
At the same time, Sunkit exclaimed, "Sure!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
"Sunkit, we need to talk." Meadowkit said quietly.
"Ok." Sunkit followed her to a corner.
"No. He can't be apart of the game." She snarled.
"He will be. I don't care what you say. He's my brother."
"Then I'm not playing." Meadowkit growled.
Sunkit grimaced. "Fine!!" She stormed over to Roaringkit.
Meadowkit steamed out of the nursery. She rushed past Snowpaw, who was currently cleaning her fur. "Meadowkit!" She called out. Meadowkit halted. "Wait." Snowpaw hurried over to her. "You ok?"
"No!!" Meadowkit yowled. "Sunkit's choosing her brother over me! Her best friend!!"
"Meadowkit." Snowpaw said sweetly. "That's a good thing. She's closer to her brother than to you, so when you're an apprentice and she's still a kit, she's got her family."
"I don't care!!" She shouted. "She's supposed to be my friend!!" With that, she raced over to her special corner and hid there, tears streaming down her face.
"Meadowkit? I thought I'd find you here. What's wrong?" Stormflame squeezed in and struggled into a sitting position next to her.
"Sunkit chose to play with her brother over playing with me."
"Meadowkit, that's a good-"
"You don't understand!! She's the only one who really understood me, and now she's siding with her brother and going against me!" She said angrily.
"Meadowkit, I-"
"No. Just don't even try." She got up and raced back to the nursery. She joined her brothers when she spotted them playing moss-ball. "C-can I play?"Thornkit looked at her surprised, but Stormkit nodded, smiling. "Of course! You're our sister!" He said. Meadowkit smiled and hurried over to him. They formed a triangle and Thornkit threw it to Stormkit. Then Stormkit threw it to her. As she reached for it, something pushed her out of the way.She looked up to see Roaringkit standing there, a look of triumph in his eyes, with Sunkit standing behind him, shocked. "Watch it, runt." He grunted.
Thornkit and Stormkit bristled and looked at him furiously. Out of no where, Stormkit let out a yowl of fury and jumped on top of Roaringflame. "Don't call my sister a runt, you no good, mouse-brained, fox-hearted tom. You have no reason to treat her like that!" He spat. Meadowkit watched him, shocked, then a rush of gratitude flowed through her. She snarled at Roaringkit, then followed her brothers over to another corner.
