Mirabel Madrigal had never had any real friends.
Casita and Antonio don't count.
She tried making friends after her failed gift ceremony, but they had all seen her as a bad omen. None of them would even go near her.
It hurt, especially when the friends she already had had left her in the dust. That was the first time she realized she lost more than just a gift on that fateful night.
Even as she grew and made it her goal to help around the town, nobody really saw her.
So, it was a real shock when the Graunt siblings wanted to hangout with her. And even though some part of her wanted to be indifferent with her walls up to the max, she found it very hard.
"I found out that my pet tilapia had been the dinner we ate that night, I never cried so hard." Rowan said, as they walked through the town.
Mirabel let out a snort, "Hey, at least you had a pet. I was always told that a pet would only be as troublesome as me."
"Yes, that makes complete sense." Anaïs sarcastically quipped.
Jamie bummed Mirabel's shoulder lightly, "You know, the more you talk about your family, the more I hate them."
Rowan immediately slapped his head, "Don't tell her that, dumbass!"
Mirabel felt her lips twitch upwards, it was nice having people be honest about what they thought of her family. Most of the time people in the village only say nice thinks because either they are a suck up or think her family needs to be worshiped.
The Madrigal girl realized that the three siblings are very chaotic and if she was being honest, that was what she likes best about them.
"No, it's okay. I get it." Mirabel responds with a light shrug.
Anaïs let out a sigh of relief, she didn't want Jamie's reckless to ruin a possible friendship with Mirabel.
Out of all the Madrigal's, Mirabel Madrigal was definitely the most enjoyable to be around. Though she was shy at first, she really has a good personality and doesn't hide behind any excuses. Which automatically made her a great person in Anaïs' eyes.
Deciding it was time to change the subject, Rowan suddenly spoke up.
"So, are you and the new gifted Madrigal close."
Mirabel immediately stopped walking and looked at him, a little taken back by the change of conversation.
But nevertheless she answered, "His name is Antonio. And yes, we lived with each other in my room for five years."
Jamie's brows frowned in confusion, "What did you mean in your room? Why didn't he sleep in a nursery?"
Mirabel blinked. "Because my room is the nursery."
Rowan blankly stared at Mirabel along with his two siblings.
They must have heard wrong.
The Madrigal household was the biggest in the whole town!
This didn't make any sense. Mirabel should have gotten her own room even if she didn't get a gift. Why did they feel it appropriate to put a five year old in a nursery?
And wasn't it inappropriate to shove a small child in Mirabel's space when she was just starting to grow?
And it's a male child a that. She would have zero privacy whatsoever, not to mention children are just disgusting by nature.
How many times did this kid pee or shit his pants while she was trying to sleep?
And don't babies sometimes cry a lot at nighttime? Why put the little screamer with a young child to be woken up throughout the night?
No matter how they thought of it, nothing made sense. It just sounded selfish and like they were dumping the duty on Mirabel despite the fact that she was a child.
Anaïs was worried about what else the Madrigal's has subjected Mirabel through. It didn't seem like she realized that it wasn't normal for that to happen at all.
Speaking of Mirabel, she had begun to notice that the Graunt siblings went quiet, and began to worry that she said something wrong.
"Not that that's a bad thing you know. Antonio and I are very close now because we shared a room." The glasses wearing girl stutterd out.
Rowan wants to protest but realizes that they still don't know each other that well. He doesn't want to open up any old wounds that the girl had probably buried deep within her.
So instead he smiles. "I'm glad. Not all of us can share a space without losing their minds."
Mirabel then does something that surprises all four of them:
She laughs.
It's loud and sounds almost magical.
She quickly collecting herself though, and answers with a smile. "I was ten when Antonio was born, so I was more curious than upset about him moving in."
Anaïs tilts her head, "Ten? Your parents waited ten years to have another child?"
Mirabel shook her head, "No. Antonio is my cousin."
Jamie immediately choked on air. "They made you share a room with your cousin?!"
"He was a baby! And plus I didn't mind, I just wanted company!" Came the defensive response.
Anaïs immediately understood the situation, and it made her hate the Madrigal's even more.
Forcing a smile on her face, she lets out a laugh. "Come one guys, friends don't fight okay?" She paused. "Okay nevermind they do, but for stupid things like taking clothes and eating each other's food."
The defensive look on Mirabel melted away like butter.
"We're friends?"
Rowan smiled at her, "Of course we are."
Anaïs and Jamie smiled at her two.
Hesitantly, Mirabel smiled back.
Friends...
She didn't know she was capable of making any.
