CHAPTER NINETY TWO !
☆
Estella spent most of her morning tiredly helping tammy rose out with the crops. she had planted a bunch of carrots, because that's the only thing tammy rose let her do as 'you couldn't mess up the carrots, you can mess up everything else.' estella didn't know why beetroots and other vegetables were so importantly in shape. she wouldn't care if she got served a deformed beetroot, anyway.
but, as she had said, tammy ross cared deeply about the shapes of her crops, so estella just stuck to her carrots. she never really did the crops at alexandria unless she was majorly bored, but there was nothing else to do at the hilltop other than crops. she could've helped rosemary cook, but estella preferred to eat than prepare.
"you're not putting enough dirt on top of the seed." tammy rose sighed, crouching down to put more dirt over it.
"there's a certain amount of dirt?" estella quirked an eyebrow.
"just like there's a certain amount of flour to bake a cake, hon. the perfect carrots don't grow with a poxy amount of dirt. be generous with it. it's natural." the older woman told her.
estella rolled her eyes at her when tammy turned her back. "okay, yeah. this is really interesting. i love planting carrots."
"me too, hon." she smiled, going back to her beetroots.
"do you ever think of taking up a different job? do you ever just get bored planting this stuff all day?" estella asked, shaking the mud off the gloves she wore.
"no, i enjoy it. come over here, i'll show you something else." tammy said as she stood up, dusting off her trousers.
"more cabbage, i assume." estella said with a slight huff under her breath, but followed tammy anyways.
tammy rose lead estella over to a large pile of dirt. estella just looked at it, and then back at tammy, wondering what it was. tammy just stared at it proudly. estella awkwardly readjusted her hat, staring down at the dirt. she had no idea what she was looking at, but tammy rose seemed to love it. estella was just confused.
it was just dirt like they had been sat in for the past three hours planting carrots in. she looked back up at tammy again, who's smile had widened. estella was actually starting to get a little concerned about the woman. she was like a creepy grandma in a horror movie that was just way too kind at the beginning.
"this is my compost pile. it's where we put all the food waste and yard waste. it turns into really rich soil that i use to fertilize my garden." tammy rose smiled happily.
"that doesn't sound very appealing." estella said, her eyebrows just raised to the top of her forehead as she stared.
"it might not look pretty, but it's very important, hon. compost is like magic. it takes all the stuff that nobody wants and turns it into something really valuable." she told her.
"so it's like... turning trash into treasure?" estella asked.
"that's exactly what it's like, hon. and it's not just good for the plants, it's good for the environment, too. when we compost, we're keeping all the waste from being dumped." tammy rose said as liv walked over.
