My heart stops.

I look up.

~

He wasn't supposed to be there.

He wasn't supposed to be lying in the middle of the street.

The car wasn't supposed to come.

I was supposed to be there.

I could have been there.

He wouldn't have been on the road.

I ran into the street, initially to ask the driver what happened but something stopped me far before I reached the driver.

His face.

I saw the face I recognized to much. The face I looked at everyday and every night. The face I had yelled at less than a half hour before.

My legs are paralyzed and I fall to the ground beside him.

His eyes were closed, his face, oh his face was bloodied and bruised. The rest of him didn't look much better.

"Call 911!" I screamed at the driver, "Get an ambulance here. Now!"

Tears streaked down my face and landed in tiny puddles on his.

"God dammit Daniel, what were you thinking?" My voice came out as whispers and my body shook with each round of screaming tears. I held his head in my hands, the world was a blurry mess around me.

"Don't you dare leave me Daniel. I won't let you leave me like this."

I was demanding the impossible from something close to a ghost.

My hair stuck to my face from the tears. I brushed his out of his face so that it wouldn't stick to the blood.

I heard the roaring siren from around the corner and saw the blurry, flashing lights as it came to an immediate stop right in front of me.

They came rushing out, carrying the only things that could keep him alive in their hands.

They made me stand back while they tried to get his heart beating again.

I sat back a few feet, pulling my knees to my chest as i rocked back and forth. My hand was held to my mouth to try and silence the waves of painful tears. I was bathed in the red and blue light, the sound of electricity as it was shot through Dan's body.

You have to stay with me. God dammit, Daniel, I won't let you go.

They brought out the stretcher and hoisted his body onto it.

"Be careful wit him!" I screamed at them though my voice croaked, the tears ran in torrents down my face.

After they lifted him into the ambulance, I went to step up into the vehicle but one of the paramedics put his hand on my chest.

"Are you family?"

My voice started to mouth no but my heart spoke first.

"I'm his...brother."
