Saturday, June 15th, Modern Day.
Eden anxiously stood in her bathroom, a pregnancy test displayed on the counter in front of her. She paced back and forth, chest heaving with nervous breaths, waiting for the test to give her an answer about if she was pregnant or not. She was terrified. Terrified she'd not be a good enough mother, terrified she'd get kicked out, terrified Argyle might leave her and she'd be left alone, terrified that- Focus, Eden. She sat in a ball in the corner of the bathroom, staring at the counter, knees tucked to her chest. Minute after minute passed but Eden couldn't find it in herself to stand up and check the results. She was scared. Scared that the small lines would read positively and her life would permanently change. What if the lines read positive and she didn't tell anybody? She couldn't keep that from Argyle. Not for very long, at least. She pulled her phone out of her pocket and checked the time as she stood up and began to walk over to the counter. 2:56 pm. The exact time her life would change. Sucking in a deep breath, Eden put her phone away and checked the test. Positive. Just as she'd feared. It was definitely Argyle's, no doubt. The dark-haired girl didn't want to tell her family, but she didn't have a choice. She knew her Dad would slut-shame her then kick her out and cut off all ties. It didn't sound so bad, but Argyle had just moved into his late parents' house and she didn't want to burden him with her presence and this unexpected news. She could not tell anybody at all-- get an abortion and move on with her life, probably burn the test in an alleyway. Then nobody would know and she could continue her life as normal. But she couldn't do that to Argyle. He deserved to know. Eden pulled out her phone again and shot him a text, smiling a bit as she saw his face on his contact.
"Hey, is it cool if I come over? It's kind of urgent."
Argyle smiled as he saw the notification pop up from Eden. As he clicked the notification and saw the 'urgency' of it, he stopped what he was doing and instantly responded.
"Yeah, it's totally fine! Is everything okay?""It's a long story, I'll be over in roughly 35-40ish mins."
"Alright. I'll see you then. I love you <3"
"I love you too <33"
Eden smiled slightly and put her phone down again. She inhaled deeply, grabbed the pregnancy test, and stuffed it into the back pocket of her baggy black jeans. As she left the bathroom and wandered through her house, looking for her Father, she couldn't help but wonder if this was a mistake. She was only 19, how the hell was she going to take care of and provide for a baby? She could barely take care of herself. Passing by screaming kids, Eden continued walking through the house until she got to her Father's office. Gingerly, she knocked on the office door.
"Come in." Her Father spoke from inside. Eden haphazardly opened the door and sheepishly stuck her head in first, the rest of her body following soon. "What do you need, Eden?" Mr. Bingham spoke sternly. Eden started picking at her nails anxiously. Her dad raised his head and glared at her expectantly. The nervous girl sucked in a deep breath and looked at her Father.
"Kick me out if you want, I don't care, but I'm pregnant." She dropped her hands and pulled the test out of her back pocket, briefly showing it to her dad before tucking it away again. Mr. Bingham's face quickly twisted into one of anger. Not only was this going against their religion of having children outside of wedlock, but Eden had also been dating (and screwing) somebody outside of their church, which also wasn't allowed. He quickly stood up and dashed towards Eden, grabbing her by the wrist angrily.
"WHAT DID YOU JUST SAY!?" He shouted.
"You heard me." Eden kept a stern, serious face as her Father grabbed her.
"FILTHY CHILD!" He screamed. "HOW AM I TO HAVE A WHORE FOR A DAUGHTER AND CONTINUE TO GO TO CHURCH?!" Eden just glared at him while he screamed on and on about how she was bringing shame to the family, how their lives would never be the same, etc.
"Why is it okay for you to force me into the position of a mother since a young age, taking care of every child in the family, but the second I'm actually carrying one that belongs to me, you freak out?" She spoke sternly. She didn't sound as scared as she thought she'd be, probably because Eden had grown used to her dad screaming at her by now.
"BECAUSE YOU'RE 19! YOU HAVE NOT MARRIED!" He screeched back at her.
"And you're not married either. Mother died 8 years ago and you have how many kids and no wife? Shame on you, Mark." Eden replied smugly, a mischievous smile forming on her lips.
"EDEN ISRAEL LILITH BINGHAM, WATCH YOUR TONE."
"Fuck you."
"What did you just say to me?"
"Fuck you," Eden spoke roughly. Her Father pulled her in closer so that his face was inches away from hers.
"You have 2 days to pack your things and leave. You bring shame to the Bingham family name. Filthy slut." With that, Mr. Bingham roughly let her go and pushed her back a bit, Eden stumbling back as she was pushed. She dusted herself off, flipped off her dad, and left the room. By this point, the yelling had attracted all the kids, so they were gathered outside the door listening. At the front of the line? Suzie. As Eden pushed through the crowd of people, Suzie chased after Eden, trying to get her attention.
"Eden, wait!!" Suzie squealed. Eden sighed as she got to her room and turned around to face the short girl.
"What do you want." She croaked. Suzie shut the door behind her and locked it, keeping her voice low as she spoke.
"You're pregnant?.." Suzie murmured.
"If you're just going to say how disappointed you are, I don't wanna hear it." Eden huffed. Suzie was probably the second most religious person in their family, besides their Father, so it wouldn't shock Eden if she was here to spread the gospel or something.
"No, I'm not! I..." Suzie trailed off.
"Suze... what's wrong?" Eden asked, her voice sounding concerned.
"I don't want you to leave!.." Suzie's voice cracked and quivered as she spoke. Tears breached her eyes beneath her glasses as she stomached the thought of her sister leaving. She didn't want to be alone without her. For as long as Suzie could remember, Eden had always been there. Whether they got along or not, she loved her sister and couldn't picture a house without Eden in it. "You can't leave, I still need you!!.." Suzie sobbed. Eden quickly stood up and pulled her into a comforting hug. Guilt washed over her as they hugged. Guilt that she'd be leaving her little sister in this terrible house with a terrible Father. Eden knew full well that their Father would be much harsher toward Suzie and would show no mercy whatsoever. She felt herself starting to cry as Suzie held onto her and sobbed.
"I'm so sorry, Suzie..." Eden spoke sadly. A stray tear rolled down her cheek and dripped down onto her sweater.
"Please don't leave me here..." Suzie blubbered. Those words hit Eden like a truck. She really didn't want to leave her here, but she didn't have a choice.
"I don't have a choice..." Eden muttered gloomily and held Suzie a little tighter to her. Suzie pulled away a bit and looked up at her sister with wet eyes and foggy glasses.
"You'll keep in contact with me, right?.." She sniffled. Eden nodded.
"Of course, I will. I'll tell you as soon as I find a place to stay and I'll keep you updated on everything if that's okay?" Eden suggested. Suzie nodded profusely.
"I wanna hear everything, and, if you keep the baby, could I help take care of it?..." Suzie asked reluctantly.
"Suzie, you don't have to do that." Eden smiled.
"I want to! I want to help. I love babies." Suzie giggled. Eden laughed lightly and pulled her sister in one more time before pulling away.
"Alright. I've gotta go break the news to Argyle, poor guy doesn't even know yet and it's his." She chuckled dryly. Suzie nodded and started walking away to leave Eden's room before pausing.
"Eden?" She said.
"Yeah?"
"I love you. Thanks for everything you've done for me." Suzie said. Silence befell for a bit as a smile crept onto Eden's face.
"I love you too." She smiled as Suzie left the room. Eden didn't want to leave the room after her with the risk of seeing her Father again, so she left out her room window and walked across town to Argyle's place.
Argyle stood in his house that once belonged to his parents unpacking boxes and putting things away. The very second he heard the knock on the door indicating Eden was here, he ran to the door to answer it. As he opened the door and saw his girlfriend standing there, in baggy black jeans, a sweater over a rock shirt, and messier-than-usual black hair, he felt himself smile, but this smile was a little confusing. Eden had said something was urgent, so it could be something bad, so why was he smiling? Eden just had that effect on him.
"Hey!" He said cheerfully, completely oblivious to the absolute truckload of news he was just about to be hit with. Eden smiled slightly before the smile on her face quickly faded.
"Can I come in?..." She asked quietly. Argyle nodded profusely and stepped out of the way to let Eden in. As she stepped inside, he shut the door behind her and walked with her to the living room.
"So what's up? What brings you over?" He asked curiously as he continued to step back towards the box he was unpacking. Eden sighed and started picking at her nails.
"Father kicked me out..." She mumbled. Argyle's face dropped.
"Shit, I'm so sorry love..." He immediately rushed over to her to pull her into a hug. "What happened, if you're okay with sharing?" He asked concernedly. Eden sighed and pulled the pregnancy test out of the back pocket of her jeans and handed it to Argyle, avoiding eye contact and keeping her head down. As Argyle pulled away from the hug and took the test, registering that the lines read positive, he paused for a moment, then pulled Eden back in, hugging her tighter this time.
"Are you going to keep it?" He asked quietly without breaking the hug.
"Do I really have a choice?" Eden responded in a low voice. Argyle pulled away to look her in the eyes.
"Absolutely you do. It's your body, nobody can tell you what you can and can't do with it. Not even me." He reassured her. Eden nodded slowly.
"I think I might..." She said reluctantly. Argyle nodded and pulls her in again as she began to sob. "I don't know how I'm going to support it, I'm not fit to be a good mother, and I'm scared Argyle, I'm so scared..." Eden sobbed into his shirt. Argyle ran his fingers through her hair as she cried.
"It's okay, Eden, It's okay... We'll figure this out, alright? Me and you. You're the most important thing to me and I'll be here to support you and the baby every step of the way. I promise." He calmly said as he began to slowly rock side to side with her in his arms.
"I'm so scared... I'm so scared..." Eden kept muttering shakily as she sobbed. "I don't know how I'm going to do this, Argyle, I've never raised a kid before..." She mumbled quietly. Argyle cupped her cheek with one of his hands and gently guided her face upwards to look at him.
"Eden. You have 8 siblings. I know you're experienced in taking care of kids. I know you can do this. I'll be with you the entire time. I swear on my life." He said reassuringly as he started to back up, pressing his back against the wall and slinking down, sitting on the floor holding Eden close to him. He continued to hold his girlfriend in his arms while she sobbed. Minute after minute passed and Eden's sobs slowed, eventually coming to a sniffly stop.
"I love you..." Eden sniffled sadly.
"I love you too. So much." Argyle smiled comfortingly.
"Thank you for being here..." Eden cuddled a little closer to him, shifting slightly and nuzzling her head a little deeper into his chest.
"I always am and always will be, mi amor, I'm not planning on going anywhere without you." He spoke lovingly. Eden smiled a bit and shut her eyes, allowing herself to be held by Argyle and just live in the moment. As she stayed cuddled up in Argyle's arms, she remembered she needed to update Suzie. Sluggishly, Eden took out her phone and sent Suzie a quick text, just telling her she was okay and that Argyle was so supportive. Suzie instantly responded with a smiley emoji. Eden smiled a little and tucked her phone away, curling up closer to Argyle and shutting her eyes again, starting to drift off to sleep.
Argyle couldn't help but feel bad for Eden. She was obviously terrified, she'd been kicked out. How could somebody do that to their own daughter? Then again, it's Mr. Bingham, so not that surprising. He's not a good Father. Or person to be exact. Hell, Suzie does their taxes and bills. Poor Eden, He thought to himself. Despite having such a calm reaction, Argyle was anxious too. He was 19 and going to be a father? It felt weird to think of himself in that way. But thinking about it as Eden being the mother of the same child? It eased his mind a bit. Eden seemed to make any idea better in his mind. From that moment on, Argyle vowed to himself that he'd try to be the best version of himself he could be and try his absolute best to provide for Eden and their child.2 hours passed and Eden stayed asleep in Argyle's arms. Argyle didn't dare move. He didn't mind having to stay like this for a while, although his butt was starting to hurt from the hardwood floor and sitting for so long. Just as long as his precious Eden got some rest, he'd do anything. Eden stirred a bit and started to wake up, her eyes fluttering open to be met with the same sight she saw before falling asleep. She groaned quietly and shifted a bit, which made Argyle clue in that she was awake. Sleepily, Eden raised her head to look at her boyfriend, who was smiling down at her.
"Morning sunshine." He grinned. "How'd you sleep?" He asked happily. Eden grunted quietly as she shifted to sit up, rubbing her eyes.
"Mmh, good... How long was I out for?..." She mumbled tiredly.
"2 hours," Argyle responded cheerfully. Eden's expression quickly shifted.
"Oh, love, you didn't have to stay like that for 2 hours! You could've woken me up." She whined.
"But I didn't, and I'm glad." Argyle smiled. "You needed rest, and I didn't want to disturb you. You've gone through a lot today." He reassured. Eden smiled a bit and sat up fully. "Since your dad kicked you out, would you want to live with me?..." Argyle suggested hopefully. Eden nodded profusely.
"Absolutely, I do! There's literally no other place I'd rather stay." She smiled and leaned her head on his shoulder, looking up at him lovingly. Argyle smiled and pulled her closer before kissing her deeply. Eden brought her hand up to cup his cheek as they kissed.Maybe starting a family together wouldn't be so bad.
