Sunday, November 24th, Modern Day.Argyle stood in the kitchen of his and Eden's shared house. He was in the process of making breakfast for himself and his girlfriend. Typically Eden skipped breakfast, but ever since she found out she was pregnant and moved in with Argyle 5 months ago, Argyle had been very specific with ensuring she was eating enough. She wouldn't be eating breakfast if it weren't for him reminding her that both she and the baby needed the nutrients and protein. Him and his convincing food talk. They'd recently found out they were going to have a daughter, thanks to Suzie, who planned a whole minigame for them to find out. They were happy to find out it was a girl, it helped calm Eden's nerves about unexpected things. By now, Eden had a noticeably swollen belly, but still small enough that it could be covered with an oversized hoodie. She always tried to keep her belly hidden anytime she went out, and it usually worked, but she knew it wouldn't be long before she'd be unable to hide it. Suzie had been around a lot in these past 5 months, she'd wanted to help as much as she could. Anything to keep her out of the house. Her Father had been relentless with her, always making her watch the kids, do the bills and taxes, etc. Suzie was under a lot of pressure for a 15-year-old. Her sister's house had become her only escape, she hadn't even been talking to Dustin. For all Dustin knew, Suzie's radio probably got taken. More like Suzie was taken from her radio. Poor girl never really had time to sit down.
"Order up!" Argyle called, catching Eden's attention, who was sitting on the living room couch on her phone, scrolling through what to expect as a pregnant person. She was very anxious about carrying a literal human, but Argyle was always there to calm her nerves. She tucked her phone away and stood up, lazily shuffling to the kitchen as her boyfriend handed her a plate. The plate had eggs, hashbrowns, and 2 neatly placed sausages. Eden gave a tired kiss to his cheek as she took her plate and wandered to the island counter in the middle of the kitchen. Setting her plate down first, she carefully hopped up on one of the chairs at the counter, adjusting herself to be more comfortable as Argyle walked over and pressed a kiss to Eden's temple before setting his plate down next to hers. He sat on the chair next to hers and started to eat, Eden following suit. As she ate, Eden kept shifting uncomfortably, trying to find the correct position to sit in where she couldn't feel the oversized bump that was her stomach. Eventually, she gave up because it's attached to her and she can't change that. Although she didn't like its appearance, Eden enjoyed being this close to her baby. Like there was a bond there already. After a bit of time, the couple finished their breakfast and Argyle took their plates, placing them into the sink to be washed later. He quickly returned to Eden to help her off the chair, although she insisted she didn't need any help, she still took it, using Argyle as a support to shimmy off the chair and get her balance on her feet. After getting herself stood up, Eden stretched her arms high above her head and arched her back, Argyle quickly moving his hands to rub circles over her shoulders, putting pressure against her spine. Eden closed her eyes and Argyle looked at her with all the love in the world.
"How are you feeling today?" He asked in a low voice.
"Good," Eden smiled. "Tired, but good. I haven't been doing much but I'm always so tired for some reason." She stated with a puzzled voice.
"It's probably because you're growing an entire baby inside of you," Argyle commented with a grin, continuing to massage her. His pizza dough-kneading hands were put to good use. "Is Suzie coming over today after church?"
"Yeah. She's apparently bringing over some stuff for the nursery too. I tried to talk her out of it, but she was persistent." Eden sighed. The nursery had been done up for a bit, the walls were blank white with a few paintings, hand-painted wall trim going along the bottom of little black waves, and some skulls, courtesy of Eden. A small crib was nestled in the corner next to a rocking chair, a changing table, and some toy chests. Humble, sweet love in the most human form. Argyle nodded as Eden lowered her arms, pulling his hands off her shoulders and sliding them down to her tummy, perching his head on her shoulder as he interlocked his fingers in the middle of her belly. Eden smiled and leaned her head on his, shutting her eyes momentarily.
"We really need to start coming up with name ideas," Argyle spoke quietly.
"I'm more concerned about last names. Do we wanna hyphenate, or give just mine or yours?" Eden thought out loud.
"It would probably help if we knew what we were going to name the little bambino," Argyle laughed. Eden hummed contentedly.
"Y'know what I say?" She started. Argyle looked at her intently. "I say it's a problem for future us." Eden grinned wolfishly and kissed Argyle on the cheek. He laughed and stood up straight, taking his hands off Eden's belly and turning her around before kissing her deeply. Eden smiled into the kiss and brought her hand up to cradle Argyle's cheek. After the kiss quickly ended, Eden started to walk away, Argyle following close behind, walking to a small room branching off of the living room. It had all kinds of crafty things, paints, fabrics, sewing supplies, etc. Eden had picked up the hobby of making little things for the baby, small stuffies, clothes, blankets, etc, using the skills she was raised with. Her mother had taught her how to sew and make clothing as a child, but she put that skill to rest after her mother passed. Now it was her turn. Her turn to be the sewing mother. But she didn't want to teach her child if she didn't want to learn, that was, because Eden never wanted to learn it. Sitting on a stool in front of a desk, she cracked her knuckles and immediately got to work, pulling out a specific dress she'd been working on for a while. A small black dress with a little white collar, and writing in white reading 'baby bat' in a Victorian-gothic font. Very Eden-esque. Of course, Argyle had asked her to make some more colorful things, like a couple of little rainbow sockies and shirts. Suzie had also been bringing over a bunch of colorful clothing, not as bright as what Argyle was envisioning. Muted, pastel, dusty tones, they were, but Eden liked them. Some outfits Suzie brought looked like little sailor outfits, however, but Eden didn't have the heart to tell her she didn't like them. She appreciated how much her sister was doing, so she just tucked them away in the closet. Finishing off some of the in-seams, Eden flipped the little dress inside out to reveal the final product. Excitedly, she turned to Argyle, who was already watching intently (he loves watching Eden sew), with a proud grin on her face.
"Look at! I made a little dress!!" Eden giggled happily. Argyle smiled at his girlfriend's excitement and pride over the dress. He loved how set she was on making her own clothes for their daughter.
"It looks amazing, mi jardín!" He exclaimed joyfully.
"I'm gonna start on some more colorful patterns now, something besides socks. A hat, maybe?" She beamed at Argyle with glowing excitement in her eyes.
"A hat sounds totally rad! Do you wanna use that new tie-dye print Suzie brought?" He suggested hopefully. Eden nodded excitedly and clapped giddily, just her fingers moving as her palms stayed planted together. She squealed gleefully and stood up, walking to a small basket in the corner and pulling out a tie-dye fabric sheet. It was the typical rainbow tie-dye, bright, but not too blinding. Tolerable. After seating herself back at the desk and tucking the dress she had made away, Eden quickly got to work. She pulled out a small design notebook and a pencil, scribbling down concept ideas and sketching out the shape she'd need to cut the fabric into. Eden then paused completely. Her eyes went wide and she quickly dropped what she was doing and grabbed Argyle's hand, pulling it towards her and placing it on her belly. A small wave-like movement rippled beneath his hand, then a full kick. Both Argyle and Eden's jaws slacked as they looked at each other, then the movement beneath Argyle's hand, then each other again. They sat there wide-eyed with dropped jaws for a moment before both of their lips formed a wide, hopeful smile.
"Was that her!?" Argyle beamed excitedly. Eden nodded eagerly.
"I don't think she likes the hat!!" She giggled as Argyle pulled her into a tight hug. Not too tight, because a bite-sized human was growing inside of her, but tight enough to show how excited he was. Both of them were glowing with joy, their eyes lit up with happiness.
"Holy shit!!" Argyle laughed and kissed Eden before moving back down to her belly, seating his head on top of her upper thigh. "Hey, little dude! It's your dad talking! You are going to be the raddest, most awesome kid there ever was, yeah? Your mom and I will make sure of it." Argyle laughed and placed his hand on Eden's bump again. Eden giggled at the sight of Argyle talking to their unborn child. She knew he would make an amazing dad with the way he was acting already. It was crazy to believe that 5 months ago she was overthinking that he'd hate the baby and her. Boy had she been wrong. She placed one hand on top of Argyle's head, giving it a quick, loving little pat before she went back to trying to sketch the design for the hat. Again, the baby kicked, hitting Argyle square in the face. "Ow!-" He rubbed his cheek where he got kicked as Eden laughed.
"Guess she really doesn't like the hat then!" She giggled, stopping her sketching to check on her boyfriend.
"Fine then." Argyle huffed and pouted playfully, but his mouth quickly shaped a smile as he looked up at Eden and laughed. He then stood up and offered Eden his hand, which she accepted, helping her up and off the chair, into the living room. He gave her hand a gentle and loving squeeze as they got to the couch, letting go as Eden walked over to the couch. Eden knew exactly why she was being taken to the couch, Argyle wanted time to lay his head on her stomach in peace. It was his way of bonding with the baby, she guessed. Crawling up onto the couch, Eden placed herself so that she was almost lying flat on the couch with her head propped up on some pillows. Once getting herself comfortable, she extended her arms dramatically, inviting Argyle to come to lie down. Argyle crawled up next to her and rested his head on her belly, his hands next to each of her hips. Eden smiled and gently played with his hair as he lay there merrily, a big, stupid, happy grin on his face. He perked his head up momentarily. "How big is she this week?" He asked curiously. Eden pauses for a moment before giving her answer.
"The size of a banana, according to the internet." She smiled. Argyle giggled and nestled his head back onto her stomach.
"Our little banana..." He said lazily, a huge dopey grin on his face. Eden giggled as she carded her hand through his hair. A knock was then heard at their front door. Suzie. Suzie had a very specific knocking pattern, easy to recognize.
"It's open!" Eden called. Suzie opened the door and entered the house. She was holding a cardboard box in her arms, it was heavy enough to make her stumble through the house until she dumped it on a counter. "Jesus Christ, Suze, when you said you were bringing stuff over I didn't think you'd bring over a heavy box," Eden said as she watched her sister struggle with the box.
"I found super cute baby things at a garage sale, in my defense! Just wait until you see them!!" Suzie squealed excitedly. Eden sighed with a smile on her face, shaking her head a bit. She tapped Argyle's head lightly a few times.
"Argyle, love, I need to get up." She said quietly with a smile. Argyle just kinda whined inaudibly.
"Nooo, I'm not done bonding!.." He whined, childlike. Eden found it adorable and laughed a bit.
"Suzie, can you bring it here and show me? Somebody doesn't wanna move." She laughed and gestured to Argyle, looking down at him briefly with a smile on her face. Suzie groaned but complied and picked up the box again, lugging it over to the couch and dropping it on the floor in front of it.
"Okay!" Suzie said as she dusted off her hands a bit before opening the box. It was full. Like, very full. Full of clothes, stuffies, toys, room accessories, and supplies. It looked like she'd robbed a Babies R Us.
"Holy shit Suzie, you didn't have to get all this." Eden laughed breathlessly at the sight of the full box.
"Just wait! Just wait!!" Suzie squealed excitedly as she pulled out a small pair of black Mary Jane shoes. Eden's face lit up.
"Oh. My. God. THOSE ARE SO CUTEEE!!" She squealed adoringly. Suzie squealed with her.
"RIGHT? I saw these and instantly thought of you." She smiled.
"This is why you're my favorite sister." Eden grinned endearingly. Her sister smiled wider.
"I would hug you right now, but PIZZA MAN is in the way." Suzie emphasized the 'pizza man' as she jokingly glared at Argyle. She always called him pizza man. Yes, she knew his actual name, but she knew him as the pizza man before she knew him as Argyle, so he is pizza man. Argyle scoffed playfully.
"How dare you. I am bonding with my child." He said, quite obviously faking being offended.
"You are lying against Eden's stomach. That is not bonding." Suzie snarked teasingly, crossing her arms as Eden laughed. Argyle's jaw dropped.
"Yes it is!" He screeched.
"Scientifically, it isn't." Suzie shrugged.
"Edeeeeennnn, make her stooopppp!" Argyle whined. He knew this was a losing battle against Suzie.
"I'm sorry love, you're on your own." Eden snickered. Suzie laughed at Argyle.
"Are you gonna move?" Suzie said with a mischievous grin. Argyle frowned dramatically and sat up. Suzie moved in to hug Eden, laughing a bit because she had to literally fight her boyfriend off of her just to get a hug. After Suzie pulled away, Argyle returned to the spot he was in, a wide smile coming across his face as his cheek made contact with Eden's baby bump. Eden smiled as Suzie put away the shoes and brought out some blankets and other little stuffies, showing them off before moving to the next item each time. "Now this is specifically for Argyle," Suzie spoke as Argyle perked his head up with intrigue. She pulled out a final blanket, one that had the design of a pepperoni pizza. It looked like a pizza. A pizza blanket.
"Pizza blanket," Argyle spoke, his jaw slacking as he looked to Eden and repeated the same phrase. "Pizza blanket." He said with a look of awe in his eyes.
"I think he loves it." Eden giggled, looking down into the childlike excitement in her lover's eyes. Seeing him get this excited over a blanket, a pizza no less was adorable. Suzie smiled.
"I'm glad. I knew he would."
"Can we bring her home in the pizza blanket?" Argyle asked softly, the same look of excitement in his eyes. Eden smiled tenderly, perking her head to the side a bit.
"I don't see why not," She responded before leaning down and pressing a soft kiss to Argyle's forehead. Suzie smiled, glad that the blanket she'd bought for them had become so sentimental. She was both happy for and scared for her sister. She'd spent her whole life raising children who weren't her own, so how was she going to react to a child that was her own? At the same time, she did have Argyle now. Maybe it wouldn't be so bad.Suzie stuck around for another couple hours before the clock struck 8:30 pm and she had to head home, so Argyle and Eden were left alone again. As Eden waved to Suzie and thanked her for the things as she left, Argyle came up behind her and waved to Suzie as well. After Eden had shut the door and turned around, Argyle leaned down and kissed her deeply, resting his hands on her waist. He always liked how his hands perfectly fit on her waist, like a puzzle piece slotting into place. Once he'd pulled away from the kiss, he nuzzled his face into the crook of Eden's neck.
"Tired?" Eden asked with a tender smile, leaning her head against his. Argyle nodded and hummed a bit. "It's only 8:30, my love." Eden chuckled a bit and wrapped her arms around her boyfriend.
"I know, but I'm sleepyyyyy..." Argyle mumbled into her neck, nuzzling a bit deeper into the crook of her neck.
"Do you wanna go lie down and cuddle?" She asked with an endearing smile, and Argyle nodded. She giggled a bit and nodded, pulling back a bit so she could take his hand and walk to their shared bed. Upon getting to said bed, Eden got up on the bed and took Argyle with her, curling up as Argyle curled up next to her, spooning up close to her with his hands on her stomach. Silence filled the air as Argyle shut his eyes and relaxed, and Eden shut her eyes and thought about their future. Their child on the way. A few more months, and she'd be here. As Argyle was starting to drift off, Eden said something that woke him right up and got his attention immediately.
"What if I don't love her?"Eden rolled over to face Argyle, a worried look on her face.
"What do you mean...?" Argyle asked with a confusingly concerned look on his face.
"Well... parents don't love their kids all the time. Take our parents for example... my parents manipulating me, and yours..." She looked down, looking solemn at the mention of their parents. Neither of their parents had been good to either of them.
"Yeah, punching bag..." Argyle looked down as well and sighed, then looked back up and brought a hand up to cup Eden's face, gently guiding her upwards to look at him. "Hey. I've seen how much you care about her already. I know you'll love her, and I know I will too. There's nothing that will change that. Ever." He said reassuringly, tilting his head slightly to the side as he looked deep into her eyes. Eden's lips quivered a bit and formed a tender smile, tears forming in her eyes.
"You're gonna be such a good dad..." She sniffled with that same smile and leaned into his shoulder, then just sobbed happy tears. Why? Pregnancy hormones. And the fact that Argyle was so sweet, sweet like sugar. Argyle smiled tenderly and held Eden close to him as she sobbed. Once she'd calmed down, Eden pulled away with a warm smile on her face.
"You're going to be a great mom. I can already tell." Argyle smiled at her sweetly, leaning forward to press a loving kiss to her cheek. Eden laughed breathlessly.
"Oh, you're gonna make me cry again." She giggled.
Yeah.Starting a family together won't be so bad.
