Slowly and gleaming fell a rainshower, Through which the evening sun shone: Beneath it, the wanderer trod on narrow paths With a gloomy soul.

They saw the large drops blinking In their descent through the golden rays: They felt them coolly drop on their head
And said with a shiver of sweet pain:

Now I know, that a rainbow Rises high above my brow, On the path that I have taken, And from a bright distance it can be seen.

And those who stand nearest to me here And think they know me well, They nevertheless cannot see How it shines above me so redeemingly.

Thus, when other days come, Which look back sunnily on this day, Above my distant, faded name A rainbow of glory will stand.
