"Ice cream is sweet, but your smile is sweeter"

Chapter 3

Nathan's pov

Nate smiled as he drove. He started thinking about the first time he saw Ken. It was the summer before his sophomore year of high school. He was a week away from being 17 and had just gotten his truck as a birthday present from his grandparents. His parents were arguing so he decided to take his sister out to the local ice cream shop in town. His then 5 year old sister was bouncing around in excitement as they walked into the shop. It seemed like a slow day as there were only two employees working. One turned around stacking cups and the other leaning against the back counter on her phone. She barely looked up when the tiny bell rung, signaling that they had costumers
They girl that was stacking cups called out "welcome! I'll be with you in a sec!"

Nate kneeled down to his sister's level "okay Pumpkin what flavor do you want?" Nate asked the bouncing girl. "Cotton candy cone! Cotton candy cone!" The girl cheered. the Nate smiled and stood up. he turned back to the counter and what he saw made his brain momentarily stop. The most beautiful girl stood behind the counter. She had honey brown eyes and coffee brown hair with green streaks throughout. When she asked for his order he saw that he had the cutest little gap in between her two front teeth. He mentally shook away his thoughts to order. "Hey, um I'd like one cotton candy cone and one strawberry cup" he said smiling. "Alright that'll be $5.50. Good choice by the way. Strawberry is my favorite" she said giggling. He smiled as he handed her the money. He walked to the pick up counter and Janet bounced over. The beautiful girl walked over after she finished scooping their ice cream "here's you ice cream, enjoy!" She smiled. "Thank you!" Janet said and skipped over to a table to start enjoying her treat. "She's adorable! Is she you sister?" Asked the honey eyed girl. "Yeah she is. Her name is Janet" said the boy "and what's your name?" The girl giggled. "U-uh Nate. My name is Nathan." The boy said nervously. The girl giggled again "well Nate, my name is Kennedy. But you can call me Ken" she said with the sweetest smile. The little bell dinged signaling that another customer had walked in "Oh well I gotta get back to work. Enjoy your ice cream."  She said walking back to her spot at the register. She started talking to the new customer as he walked over to table where is sister was sitting. "Was that your friend bubba?" The girl asked with ice cream all around her mouth. "No. I've actually never seen her before" he said still looking at the girl behind the counter. "Bubba your ice cream is gonna melt" she said looking at her brother with curiosity. "Oh yeah" he said finally peeling his eyes away from Ken. He quietly ate his ice cream while listening to his sister ramble as hyperactive five year olds do.

By the time Nathan had snapped back to reality, he noticed that he was driving into the ice cream shop parking lot. 'well, I might as well get something since I'm already here' he thought. He walked into the shop. The girl at the counter looked up upon hearing the little bell ding. He walked up to the counter and ordered. " Hi can I get a cotton candy cone and a strawberry cup please?" He asked smiling at the familiarity of the order. "Yeah, that'll be $5.50" the girl said.

Recognition lit up the girls eyes as she realized who he was. " Hey, aren't you that guy with the cute little sister? Ya know the one that's always bouncing around the shop chanting." The girl said laughing. "Yeah, that would be me." Said the boy rubbing his neck and laughing nervously.  "my cousin told me about you before her accident" she said giggling before looking down sadly. "she works here every summer. She used to always tell me about this cute guy that came in with his bouncing little sister, but she was in a car accident later that summer and got amnesia" she said still looking down. "Oh, well I hope she's alright" he said. " Yeah she's alright. She goes to school around here and still works here during the summer. It's a family business so our parents let us work when we're off school but since I'm not in School anymore, I get to work year round" she said giggling at the last part.

She smiled and handed him the ice cream. She had Scooped while talking. "enjoy your ice cream" She said smiling softly. " Thanks we will" he said smiling before walking out. 

As he drove to the school, he thought about what he had just learned. He had no idea she was in a car accident. He hadn't started stocking her until that coming school year. He had never learned of the car accident. 'I thought that she just didn't remember me. and I guess she didn't' he thought sadly. He shook those thoughts away as he pulled into the pick up spot. The teacher in charge called out his sister's name and she came skipping up to his car. "Hi Bubba" she said brightly as she got into the car. "guess what pumpkin. I got us ice cream!" Nate said smiling. "YAY! Ice cream! ICE CREAM!" The girl cheered from her seat. "Thank you bubba!" She thanked him excitedly.

"All right now Do you want to go to the park?" he asked trying to delay going home. "Yeah!" The girl said even more excited. "All right then. let's go." he said, starting towards the park.

(authors note: sorry about the short chapters but if I wait to make longer chapters, it's gonna take a lot longer to finish so sorry about that.)
