Skylar's POV

He was at our table in no time, his eyes never straying away from mine.

I could make out many emotions swimming in his eyes behind his emotionless mask, but the main three were confusion, anger and sadness. I've always been good at reading people, even when they'd try to hide their true emotions, but sometimes I wish I wasn't.

I open my mouth, ready to tell him off but a loud 'smack' followed by an equally loud 'thud' rang through the air causing both me and Jason to snap our heads to the other side of the table. Sam laid sprawled on the floor holding his jaw as Max, one of Jason's best friends, stood panting in anger near his feet.

"Fucking dare you to repeat that to me one more fucking time" he spits as he glares down at Sam. Anger floods through my body as I get up and storm my way over to him. Who the Hell does he think he is, talking to Sam like that?

I shoved him hard on the chest once I'm standing in front of him.

"What the fuck is your problem?" I ask as I shove him one more time with a little more force. He barely even moves an inch as he glares down at me before glaring down at Sam.

"You better make sure he stays the fuck away from me, or else I'm going to break-"

Smack

I bitch slap him, causing his his face to snap to the other side, successfully shutting him up.
He stays unmoving, eyes slightly wide in shock as he slowly turns his head to look at me.

The whole cafeteria is silent, all eyes watching the scene unfold in front of them quietly and in shock. Jason slowly starts to walk his way over to us as Max slowly straightens himself up, his fingers softly running over his now bruised cheek as his shock fades away and his eyes flare in newfound anger.

"Did you just... slap me?" He asks threateningly. I feel my anger quickly  disappear, getting  replaced by fear but I didn't let it show. "Yeah I did slap you, what are you going to do about it though tough guy?" I ask him boredlly, succeedingly hiding my fear, i shiver slightly at the murderous glint that appears in his eyes at my words.

He chuckles darkly as he leans down closer to me. "You really don't want to know" he whispers angrily. I was just about to slap him again when Max was pulled back and replaced by Jason.

His back was faced to me as he pulls Max closer to himself and whispers something in his ear. Max whispers something back angrily before storming back over to me. "I apologize for my behavior but you have no right in laying your hands on me" he states tightly, hands clenched tightly at his sides.

" You're right, i had no right in laying my hands on you just as much as you had no right in laying your hands on Sam either. Apologize to him, i don't care about the reason, just apologize" i tell him as i point to Sam, who now stood beside Mark and Nina with an already visible bruise forming on his darkening jaw.

Max clenches his teeth in anger and irritation before gritting out an apology to Sam and storming out of the Cafeteria in both anger and annoyance . Tom mumbles something to Jason before leaving the Cafeteria as well, most likely going to check on Max.

A hand wraps around my arm as I move to go back to my seat. I turn my head slightly to see Jason looking down at me intently. He leans down, his  breath tickling my ear as he mumbles "Don't ever put your hands on Max like that again, he doesn't do good with people treating him the way you did and you're really lucky I was here to stop him from letting his anger win and get out of control." Before turning around and leaving the room.

The silence continued and I look up to see everyone's eyes on me. "What are you all looking at, mind your own damn business!!" I snap, causing everybody to quickly look away from me and continue their conversations. I walk over to Sam and ask him if he needed an ice pack for the briuse on his jaw but he denied and told me that it was just fine.

We all walk back over to the table and I finish eating my tacos in silence as I think through Jason's words. Did Max have an anger issue? Or was he abused when he was a child? I'm not sure but what I do know is that I should probably apologize to him either later, today or tomorrow.

I get up and throw away my trash. Me and Nina say our good  byes to Mark and Sam before leaving the cafeteria and heading over to the gym.
Our walk was silent, none of us speaking a word, both deep in thought. We walk in just as the bell rings.

"Everybody in a straight line, today we will be playing volley ball so pick our your two team captains before choosing your team members and starting the game" Coach Mike orders as he looks down at his clip board. Me and many others groan before getting ready for the game. All the boys looking at each other challengingly. This really is going to be a long and interesting afternoon.
