Pop and I were at the hospital so I could get checked out.

As soon as word got out about the freak accident that happened in town, he high tailed it over to make sure I was okay. Which I was. I just hit my head a little harder than I thought I did.

I was sittin' on a gurney, my dad sittin' in a nearby seat as the E.R. doctor looked into my eyes with her pen light. The double doors suddenly busted open, Ma rushin' in, in her work scrubs, with worry written all over her face.

"D, baby!" she said, out of breath, "Are you alright? Your father called me as soon as it happened!"

"I'm good, ma," I chuckled. "It's just a scratch."

"What about Jorja? Is she okay?"

"She's good, too. I told her to head back to the dorm."

Ma breathed a sigh of relief before engulfing me in a hug, me accepting it before she sat with Pop.

That's when a beautiful woman with blonde hair and a fancy doctor's coat came strolling in. Her eyes were amber with hints of green, and her smile was enough to send warmth down your entire body.

"I heard the Chief's son was here," she greeted, her voice rich and soft.

"You heard correct," Pop smiled, going up to hug the woman as Ma smiled at her. "Thanks for offering to take him in on such short notice."

"Of course," she said before looking my way. "Hi, D. I'm Dr. Knowles. How you feelin'?"

"Nice to meet you in person," I said. "And I'm good. Just a slight headache, but it's nothin' compared to the concussions I got playin' ball."

"That's right! Your mom was tellin' me that you're WSU's new wide receiver. Team treatin' you well?"

"Oh, for sure. Those are my boys."

"That's good to hear," she said, kindly accepting the E.R. doctor's chart. "My wife and I will have to come out and see you play sometime."

She reviewed my chart before feeling the back of my head.

"You got a nice little knot growin' back there," she informed. "But your x-rays show no indication of a concussion."

"Thank God," I said. "It would've been a lot worse if Normani didn't knock me out the way."

"Normani?" Ma asked before looking to her boss. "You're daughter?"

Dr. Knowles smiled before looking to us.

"Yeah," she said. "She can be a little...off-putting at times, but she means well."

"She saved my life, doc," I said. "It was amazing...she got to me so fast...and she was nowhere near me..."

Dr. Knowles smiled at me. Her eyes held the same gleam Normani's did. It was kinda crazy.

"I'm just glad you're safe," she said before looking to my parents. "Ya'll are good to go. D doesn't have any major injuries, but I'd suggest takin' it easy for a little while. I already have a note for your coach."

After I got Dr. Knowles's note, me and my parents exited the treatment area. That's when it dawned on Ma that her and Pop had to go to the front desk to sign some paperwork.

"I'll meet ya'll in the parking lot," I told 'em.

They nodded before makin' their way to the lobby. As I strolled my way to the parking lot, I pulled out my phone to send Jorja a quick text.
