"Rae! Don't!"...
Iya's mind was flooded with thoughts of her 12 year old twin sister while she lay wide awake in the bottom bunk of her Dream safe® bunkbed. Rae was her twin sister.
Exactly one year ago that day, Rae and Iya were walking to Rotary Park for their birthday party; they were going to have a picnic by the pond. "Come on! Let's go already!" said Rae. The only thing keeping them from the pond was the international highway that ran from Edmonton to California; it was a nightmare to try and cross.
Iya dosed off. The next morning, when she awoke, it was her birthday. It would have been Rae's too. Instead of being excited, she was devastated; this was her first birthday since Rae was gone. Iya's stomach growled, but she didn't want to eat. She knew what was for breakfast, she could already smell it; Chocolate Belgian waffles! It was her favorite, but it was also Rae's. Everything she did that day was a reminder that her twin sister wasn't there.
Rae, being the more adventurous twin, decided to make a daring run to the other side of the eight lane highway. What a mistake it was to run to the other side.
"Rae! Don't!" Iya yelled, "Please! We can wait a couple more minutes for the crosswalk to start!"
Rae didn't listen. She dashed off into the traffic. Iya didn't know what to do. That hesitation caused the worst decision of both Rae and Iya's lives. Rae ran as fast as her legs would take her. She made it to the patch of grass dividing each group of four lanes, and sat down to use her inhaler. Little did she know that a car was speeding down the road.
"Happy birthday! You're 13!" Iya's parents set up a surprise birthday party for her. "They never threw a surprise party when Rae was here", she thought.
Iya was not happy that they were so happy. She was not happy at all. Instead of pretending to be happy, Iya ran away to her room. That was the second worst day of her life.
The driver that was speeding down the road, his name was Andrew Seidl. He had been arrested for drunk driving on multiple accounts. This was no exception. Rae, unaware that he was coming, started running across the highway again.
"Rae! Don't!" Iya yelled once again. This time as loud as she could, but it was too late. Seconds later there was a piercing scream. Andrew Siedl had hit Rae, and killed her.
The police arrested Andrew four days later for drunk driving. And murder. The funeral was held two weeks later, all of Rae's family and friends went to support her, except Iya. It hurt too much to say goodbye.
To this day, Iya regrets not holding her twin sister back from running.
"I miss you Rae."
The end.
