I was always told to tell the truth growing up. They always said lying was for cowards.

They never told me that the truth doesn't matter, only what the people believe.

Sirens wailed in the distance, piercing like bullets towards me standing in the alley. No doubt they were coming for me.

I looked back down the alley after the buyer who had run off previously. I could follow to try and avoid the police and to get away from the body, but there was always the chance of the passage leading to a dead end.

My eyes landed on several rungs stuck to the side of one of the brick walls, leading up to the roof. I think I had enough time. I leapt up to grab the rungs forming the ladder, quickly climbing them. The metal was cold, searing my hands even through my gloves. As I pulled myself onto the roof, I felt something slide from my pocket, and I wasn't able to catch the upes pill that fell from my cloak, down onto the ground beside the dead dealer.

I swore to myself, but I couldn't go back down to get it now. I could hear the hurried footsteps of the authorities making their way down the alley already.

I swept myself onto the roof, pulling my cloak over the edge just as I spotted the cops come into my sight range. I ducked, pressing my body against the concrete and listening to their conversation.

"A deal was made here. We may need backup." Spoke one of the officers. "Bullet's intact, we might be able to unearth the suspect by their gun."

"Yeah, but what's this that they left-?" I heard a shuffle as the number of police below me inspected something. I made the mistake of giving in to my curiosity and peering over the edge. I saw five officers, all inspecting the body, one with the upes pill I had dropped in his palm.

Unfortunately, I looked down just as one looked up, making eye contact for just a moment before I pulled back.

"UP THERE!" He instantly shouted, to which I heard another clamber as they discovered the ladder.

WHY WAS EVERYTHING GOING WRONG TODAY?

I pushed myself to my feet, sprinting across the flat roofed building. This was bad. I had nowhere to hide. I could see pieces of the cities from here, the ground below me bathed in red and blue lights from the automobiles below that the authorities had taken. I heard the scramble of the cops climbing the rungs, hoisting themselves onto the roof just behind me.

"Stop, now! In the name of the law!" One of the officers demanded as I ran towards the other end of the roof.

I ignored them. Obviously. Because I was clearly above something as simple and stupid as the law.

I was coming to the edge of the roof, aiming for the building directly across one of the narrow alleys. It was a five-foot jump to the other roof. I could totally make that.

"STOP!" One of the officers repeated just as I launched myself from the edge of the roof, landing on the slanted tilt that was the one across from me. I stumbled, one of my feet nearly catching on a shingle before I took off, keeping myself from tumbling off the edge onto the street below.

I wondered if they were in shooting range- but just as the thought broke into mind I felt a trail of blazing heat pass right by my calf, the reverberating sound of one of the cop's blasters echoing through the air. They were definitely in shooting range.

I twisted, shooting a few times behind me with my backup gun. I had to smack the barrel a few times to get the trigger to loosen. I really needed a new one.
