We hadn't noticed the time. When we did, we went back to the school. It's gotten really dark. Like to where its super hard to see. Oh my god. How much trouble are we going to be in when the teachers see my bike still at the school? Shit. Man, I hope that we don't get into too much trouble. I wonder when my parents will be back from their trip. It's only been like one day, but I just miss them. It takes a few minutes, but we get back to the school. No cars were there or anything. Creepy. The sun had gone down early so it was extra creepy. We get to the bike rack. You have got to be kidding me.
"My bike is gone." I get off of the pegs. "What the fuck."
"Some asshole kid must've stolen it." Oliver pointed out. "I can give you a ride."
"Yeah, no shit." I sigh. "Are you sure?"
"You ask that a lot." He mocked. "Yeah, I'm sure, it's not safe to walk home in the dark even living close."
"I guess." I got back on the pegs. "I don't want to be a nuisance."
"Hey, don't worry bout it." He says beginning to peddle again. "You will just owe me."
"I don't have money." I grumbled.
"Not money." He shrugged. "Nothing inappropriate either, just like a bike ride in return."
"I'm glad you cleared that up." I shared. "Ok, so instead of going right up here go left."
He went left.
"So how long have you lived in Maine?" He questioned.
"All my life, just not from this part." I answered. "I lived an hour or two away from here."
"Oh?" He acknowledged. "Why did you move?"
"My parents got job offers." I passed on. "I was forced to move here."
"Oh, I'm sorry." He frowned. "I hope it's not too bad."
"Well let's see, I was late for my first day at a new school." I said sarcastically. "Oh, and my bike went missing."
"Yeah..." He trailed off. "I'm sorry, but hey I was late too."
"You say that a lot." I teased. "It's not your fault."
"Oh, hey we are here." I groaned. "You can go up the drive, no one's home."
My house was off white, with a bright red door and the windows were clouded over. It looks haunting at night with only one light on the outside of the wrap around deck. Spooky. At least I have Mochi. Mochi is my kitten. Who I totally forgot to feed this morning. Oh no! Oliver continues to go up the drive. Man. What a damn day. He stops by the deck.
"Thanks, I appreciate it." I get off the bike once more. "It was nice to meet you."
"No problem anytime." He smiled. "It was nice to meet you as well Emmie."
"You should probably go before it gets too late." I spoke.
"Yeah, your right." He looked around. "Is it ok if I cut through your yard?"
"Sure!" I laughed. "I guess I'll see you tomorrow?"
"Maybe." He started heading through the trees. "Again, I'm sorry about your bike."
"No worries, goodnight." I waved.
He waved back. Alright time for supper. I go to check my phone to see the time. No. Damn it. Come on seriously. It could literally be anywhere. Ugh. It's too late and dark to look for it tonight. How am I going to get to school tomorrow. I sigh and walk into the house.
"Hey Mochi." I greeted the hungry cat. "How was your day?"
All I got in return was a meow.
"I know, I'm sorry." I pet him. "I was running late."
Mochi is a kitten that I found on the way to this house for the first time. I asked my parents if I could keep him, and they surprisingly said yes. He was actually under the porch. I noticed his black and orange fur, and his eyes were glowing bright one yellow and one blue. He's quite a special little man. Ok little man let's get you your food. I go to the cabinet next to the fridge. Meoooow. Meow.
"Ok Mochi, I'm getting it for you." I say as I start to put some in his dish. "Here you go."
He gobbles it immediately. Wow little man you really were hungry. I'm going to have to get up super early tomorrow to walk to school. I got some leftovers from the night mom and dad left I eat them immediately. God. How am I gonna tell them that I didn't go to school the first day, lost my phone, and someone stole my bike. I'm so grounded. Maybe I should go look for my phone. It could be by the lake, at school, or I don't know. It will be fine. I can feel pain in my chest. Ugh. You are right.
"Mochi, I'll be back stay here." I kiss his little forehead. "Be good."
I walk out the door, grabbing a flashlight out of a drawer. At least I have some sort of light. I go down the porch stairs looking everywhere in front of the house just in case I drop it out here. I was hoping that's what happened. I sigh as it is nowhere to be seen. Damn it. I continued walking down the path Oliver and I traveled hoping it would be there, but it wasn't.
I think I was over by the school when I started hearing things. Footsteps, breathing, cracking in the distance. I started to walk faster and faster. The sounds would go away for a little while but would slowly catch up to me. Don't look behind me. I don't want to know.
I decided to ignore it until I got to the school, there are streetlights around the school. With that thought I could see the school in the distance. Run. You need to run. The hairs on the back of my neck proceeded to stand on end. It's like I could feel the breathing on my neck. I scream and start running as fast as I can to school. I can hear it. It was running too. After me? Or away from something? I'm too damn scared to find out, so I continue to run. I finally got to the bike rack. No phone, no bike, nothing was here. I turn around to see the thing that was following me. Meow.
"What the hell Mochi!" I was almost crying from fear. "Why!?"
I picked him up. Thank God, he followed me. He could've gotten lost or eaten, or worse. Let's go home. Screw the phone. I'm done for the night, maybe Oliver found it. We walk back to the house, and I lock the door and give Mochi a tiny lecture, but how can I stay mad at him. How did he even get out... The hair on my neck stands again.
"H-Hello?" My voice my shaky. "Is anyone here?"
I grabbed a knife. I walk slowly into every single room, turning on the lights. I grip the knife before going into the next room.
"Mom? Dad?" I plead. "I've contacted the police, whoever you are, you need to leave."
No answer. No noise. Nothing. What the hell is going on. I decided to put the knife away, I grabbed Mochi and made a run for my room. I make it in one piece. I did almost trip on the stairs. I did, however, leave all the lights on. There is no way in Hell I'm gonna be in the dark tonight. Mochi was purring in my hand the whole time. Of course, he was. I turn on my bed stand light. I then proceed to get tucked underneath the covers cuddling Mochi as he continues to purr.
"Goodnight Mochi." I kiss him on the head. "Sweet dreams."
