"I feel so bad," I whine.

Julia links her arm with mine to offer some comfort as we make our way down the avenue.

"It's going to be fine," she reassures me. "We'll be back before anyone even notices we're gone."

I nod, but I can't shake off the guilt. This is the first time I've ever lied to my dad and the fact that I'm doing it for Julia's safety doesn't make it any better. Tonight, she's meeting an older guy she's been talking to on a dating app for a few weeks. She's always had a thing for older guys, and I can't deny that I share the same preference. My job tonight is just to make sure she's safe and that her date isn't a creep.

"Are you nervous?" I ask her.

She shrugs. "A little. What if he's a catfish or a psycho or something?"

"We should have a code word in case things go south," I suggest.

"Good idea," she agrees.

"What about three coughs?" I propose. "If either of us coughs three times, it means we need to leave."

"Alright," she agrees.

We arrive at the bar where her date is waiting. Before we enter, we turn to face each other.

"I'll go in first," she volunteers.

"Good luck," I wish her.

She points at her boobs. "I don't need luck when I got those," she jokes and winks at me before heading inside.

I wait outside for a few minutes before joining her.

The bar is packed with people, and I have to tiptoe to spot Julia amidst the crowd. Finally, I catch a glimpse of her. She's standing at the bar with her date who, to my relief, doesn't look older than 20. He flashes a smile at her, and she reciprocates. Everything seems to be going well.

As I start to look for a seat, my eyes lock onto a familiar face, and my heart trips over itself.

It's Kakucho, my godfather. He's sitting at a table at the back of the bar. He seems to be alone, but for all I know, my other godfathers might be joining him, or worse, my father or my uncle.

Panic sets in, and I shoot a look in Julia's direction. My best friend seems to be enjoying her time too much to notice my distress. I quickly bring my attention back to Kakucho whose eyes are now slowly sweeping the bar. If I don't move, our eyes will inevitably meet.

Without thinking, I turn around and head towards the door, rushing out into the street. My mind races with thoughts of what could happen if Kakucho tells my dad that he saw me at a bar. I need to get back to Julia's house and sneak back into her bedroom without getting caught.

As I run, I pull out my phone from my pocket to call a taxi and text Julia, but I trip and accidentally drop my phone on the ground.

"Shit."

I bend down to pick it up and try to turn it on, but the screen is cracked, and it won't switch on. I frantically think of what to do, gasping for breath as I look around and try to orient myself.

I'm in an unfamiliar neighborhood, and it's dark, and on top of all of that, my phone is now broken.

Just then, I spot a lone shop that still has its lights on further down the street. Hesitantly, I start making my way towards its. I lift my head to read the storefront sign.

D&D Motorcycle Shop

A bike shop?

I cast a look at the street over my shoulder.
