Proposal
SUNNY FELT HER HEART LEAP AGAINST HER chest when she heard the banging on the front door. Besides a few pranksters, or little kids, nobody came all the way out to her neck of the woods unless they were a cop, or case manager searching for her. Slowly, and quietly, she pushed the thin sheet laying on her body off, and slid away from her crickety old mattress, doing her best not to make any noise.
The Christensen girl slid on her old, beaten up sneakers, and quietly walked towards the back door as the banging continued, her heart thumping against her chest.
Expertly, as she did every time that she had to hide from someone, she slid out the door, and started to work her way deeper into the marsh.
"Hey!" A voice yelled from not too far off, one that was firm, and deep, but also one that quite obviously didn't belong to an adult.
... but, it also didn't belong to John B so, who was it?
Sunny stayed behind some beautiful green foliage , peaking just over it to see who it was that was calling out for her.
"I just want to talk!" He yelled once again, the girl seeing it was a teen, her age, possibly a year older. She studied his body language, and determined he wasn't a threat for now.
That, and if he tried to fight him, she could take him for sure.
Slowly, Sunny came out of the bushes and approached the boy. Suddenly, after taking a look at him, she found herself intimidated by how expensive he looked. His expensive clothes made her self conscious about her cheap ones, and her heart was making leaps and bounds around her chest.
"Stay far back..." Sunny held up her hand as the boy approached, making him step back slightly.
"Okay..." the rich looking teen stood up straight, stuffing his hands in his pockets. "I don't know if you remember me but... my family used to come out fishing this way a long time ago. My name is Topper? You helped me find my family's boat as kids."
Having all this time alone made Sunny greatly appreciate whenever she met someone outside of her family so, of course she remembered. The memory of that day quickly flashed through her mind, and from what she could recollect, he was a kind boy. Time changes people though, and that was what she was afraid of.
"Yes, I remember." The Christensen girl nodded her head lightly, clearing her throat. "If you wanna go fishin', it's none of my business, you go on ahead."
Topper chuckled at the girls answer, and shook his head slightly, "No, I came to invite you somewhere, a party."
"A party?" Sunny furrowed her brows and shook her head. "Oh no... I—... I don't drink alcohol, it doesn't do anybody no good."
"Not that kind of party." The Thornton boy approached slowly, making the other teen jump slightly but, relax upon realizing he meant no harm. "A nice one, fancy even."
"Fancy...? Oh no, I don't even got a fancy outfit or nothin', I couldn't." Sunny shook her head uncomfortably. "Thanks for askin' though, it's real nice of you to come all this way."
"I'll buy you whatever you need, I was kind of hoping you'd be my... date." Topper finally sighed, and ran a hand through his hair. "My girlfriend—... ex-girlfriend is with John B now, if she sees me—"
"I don't want to be apart of any tricks." Sunny shook her head, and folded her arms across her chest. "It's none of my business."
"I think it kind of is, the whole island used to talk about how he'd sneak out here to see you. You didn't have something going on?" The boy, with the dirty blonde hair questioned.
The Christensen girl found herself sweating at the question, she loved John B. She knew that was an absolute fact above all else. However, for what they had to be considered "something" he had to reciprocate them, right?
... and if he left her in the dust, and moved on without thought, did he really ever care at all?
"Why me?" Sunny ignored the question, by asking one of her own design.
"You helped me all those years ago, and i'm hoping we can help each other now. Be seen together, make them jealous. They'll come back to us, I know they will." In the Christensen girls eyes, the boy before her sounded absolutely nuts, ridiculous even.
... but she did long for the days her and John B would stay up and watch the stars.
"I won't have to do anything mean, will I?" Sunny asked with a quirked brow, tilting her head to the side.
Topper chuckled before he decided to answer the question, finding her naivety quite refreshing in the world that he liked in, "no, nothing mean. We'll just hang out together. Pretend it's our debut."
Sunny bit the inside of her cheek in thought. Throwing herself into a world full of people who hated her would be tough, she knew that full and well. He must have loved Sarah enough to deal with the scrutiny of being seen with her just to catch the blonde's attention, and maybe, Sunny loved John B just enough to deal with the stares and glares of all the Kooks.
"I don't want you to spend too much on my dress, okay?" The Christensen girl paused upon realizing that her legs were covered in hair, another thing different about her, and the girl Topper and John B loved. "Something long, please."
"Well—... I don't know how to pick dresses." Topper put out a hand to help the girl through the messy patches of greenery. "Come on, we'll go together."
Sunny hoped over anything that she would not regret the choice to leave her safe place over something as stupid as a boy. Though, after her mother left, John B Routlege was the only person she had in her life. She couldn't let him go without at least trying to get him back.
... right?
