"Gracie you don't understand what it was like," I sigh and flop into her bed, "it was like we'd known each other for years."

Gracie lies down next to me, "So you like him?"

"No," my face goes flat, "I was just leading on a stranger. Yes, Gray, I like him."

She giggles, "I knew it. But what are you going to do? We start tour with Taylor the first and then after that, I'm touring."

"Yeah I don't know," I rub my eyes, "and he told me something and I want to tell you."

She sits up slowly, "What? It sounds scary."

"No, it's not," I look down towards my hands.

Spit it out Mel

"He said I should think about starting to sing my own music. And like I love writing with you, it's my favorite thing, but I can't do it forever, you know?"

Gracie goes silent, but a smirk plays on her face, "It took a guy for you to hear that? I've been saying that forever."

I let a out a breath I didn't know I was holding, "Hallelujah. You scared me."

"Why?" She shakes her head, "You, Melanie, are my best friend in the entire world. Obviously I want the best for you. While I will be losing my favorite songwriter, I'm glad you're finally branching out."

Tears well up in my eyes, "I'm sorry."

"Don't be sorry," she pulls me in and hugs me, "this is good, Mel. Really good. And you're freaking awesome. I have no doubt that your music will skyrocket."

"I love you so much Gracie." I squeeze her tighter.

"I love you too," She sighs, "So are you still gonna tour with me?"

"Absolutely," I pull away and nod, "I couldn't miss it. But I might come home to work during weekdays."

"Yeah I figured. So do you have any songs of your own?"

I tilt my head, "Yeah. Here."

I take out my phone and go to voice memos and play her a rough draft of a song called Going Going Gone.

"Wait I actually love that. That's amazing," she looks up at me after the song finishes.

I shrug, "It needs some cleaning up. I didn't really know if I liked it or not. But it's one of the only ones I have almost finished. There's like 10 others that I haven't gotten all the lyrics for."

"Still, Mellie," she nods her head, "that's awesome. And all by yourself? I'm so proud of you."

I smile, "Thanks. I was worried you'd be upset."

"What?" She shakes her head, "How could I be mad?"

I shrug, "I don't know."

She laughs, "Well we can work on some of your songs right now. I have nothing better to do."

"Really?" I smile, "You'd do that."

"You've done it for me for years," she stands up and pulls me with her, "it's your turn."

We go into her studio and I sit on the couch while she sits up by the keyboard. She was always better at the actual music part, but I'm better with lyrics.

We make music differently. She finds the melodies and the harmonies, but I find the words. That's why we work so well together.

After finishing up the first song, we go into the second one.

"This one I just found the lyrics for last night. I don't have any idea of what I want it to sound like," I pull out my phone and the lyrics out loud.

She contacted her record label and set up a meeting for me earlier. I'm so excited.
