What would you do just to forget your first love?
------------------------------------------------------------------------The machine hummed, its metallic surface flickering with pulse-like lights. It was sleek, almost innocuous but wielded the ability to rewrite reality-or at least, their version of it.
Khalil sat on the cold leather chair, gripping the armrests as if to let go would find him plummeting into infinity. Across from him, Irvine sat back in her chair, her lips pressed thin. This was what they had agreed upon. They had entered the facility together, signed the papers, and now were off in the machine to let it work its magic.
"Are you sure?" asked the technician in a deadened, monotone voice, as though erasing love were as simple as erasing a file.
Neither answered right away. Kian gave one last look at Ava: sunset drives, whispering secrets, and laughter that used to fill up empty spaces. Now they were memories no longer comforting but an ache he could not stand.
Ava took a deep breath. "Yes," her voice broke.
Khalil gulped. "Yes."
The technician nodded and pressed a button. Some kind of soft humming sound grew in the room, and warmth spread across Khalil's skin. He looked at Irvine for the last time as the memories started slipping, dissolving, vanishing.
For a moment, he thought he could see in her something like regret in her eyes. But then-
Nothing.
