ARO QUICKLY NOTICED THE DIFFERENCE IN HIS BROTHER MARCUS. When they first met, Marcus was intrigued by Aro's enthusiastic personality and hunger for power. Marcus was Aro's first friend as a vampire and he became his most trusted companion. With their other brother, Caius, they formed the Volturi and claimed power over the vampire world.

They had been alive for centuries and had seen the world change in ways that most mortals could never imagine. But with every passing decade, Marcus found himself growing increasingly distant from the world around him. Aro could see how heartbreak destroyed his brother and how he seemed to be trapped in a never-ending cycle of grief.

It was about ninety years ago Aro noticed the small differences in Marcus. His eyes used to appear dull, lifeless, and empty, lacking spark and energy. That one day it seemed like a newfound sense of purpose and hope brought a lightness to his eyes, a spark of joy that wasn't there before.

Aro remembered that day well because the two of them used to be very open with each other but after that day Marcus avoided Aro's touch. Aro possessed the ability to read people's minds, he was able to reach deeply into a person's mind, and was capable of reading every thought, feeling, and memory a person has ever had in the past.

But now Aro could see it more clearly. He saw a spark of hope and joy that he had not seen from him in a long time. They had spent countless years together but something had shifted within Marcus, an ethereal change that caught Aro's attention.

Marcus spent most of his time in the castle, rarely venturing out into the world and now suddenly he was about to go out two days in a row. The three brothers were in their shared study, they all had their own, but the biggest one was their shared one. Caius was sitting on the couch sketching something in his notebook as Aro was sitting by the table reading a book when Marcus walked into the room and headed toward the bookshelf.

Caius seemed to be in his own world but Aro was curiously eyeing his brother who seemed to be in a good mood which was very rare.  "What are you searching for, brother?" He decided to ask as he noticed Marcus picking up original editions of different books in his hands.

"Just browsing," Marcus replied but he didn't take his eyes away from the bookshelves.

"Are you heading out?" Aro's voice was full of curiosity.

"Just for a bit," Marcus replied, keeping his tone of voice the same.

Aro raised his brows from the table. "Anything particular for today?" He tried to get more information out of him but Marcus' expression didn't change.

"Just getting some fresh air." He replied and turned to exit the room without turning to look at his friends.

DAHLIA WAS STANDING IN FRONT OF THE HOTEL she was staying at and nervously waiting for Marcus to arrive. The vampire she had met just the day before in the museum and who she had shared a wonderful day. She was nervous but that seemed to disappear when she spotted him.

Marcus exuded an air of quiet confidence and he carried himself with a gentle grace. His well-defined features, chiseled jawline, and piercing eyes held a hint of mystery, drawing her into his eyes. His gaze was both intense and warm, capable of conveying a myriad of emotions with just a single glance.

His dark, tousled hair fell effortlessly, framing his face that radiated both strength and vulnerability. There was an effortless grace to his movements, and when their eyes met, his smile, like a ray of sunlight breaking through a cloudy sky, lighted up the whole place.

"Hey," she breathed when he finally reached her and she gave him a shy smile.

"Dahlia, a pleasure to see you again," Marcus said, his voice rich and velvety, carrying a soothing resonance that had the power to captivate her attention. "I brought you something."

Marcus had brought a collection of his favorite literary treasures and he was clutching the stack of books wrapped in delicate paper, each carefully selected. With a nervous smile and a touch of anticipation, he presented her with the beautifully wrapped bundle.

Curiosity sparkling in her eyes, Dahlia unwrapped the first book, her fingers delicately tracing the embossed title on the cover. She seemed to be in awe as she stared at the book and mostly at the fact that he had gone on his way to prepare this gift for her.

Dahlia admired the book and then back at Marcus who seemed to be nervously waiting for her response. "Wow, Marcus. It's beautiful and really thoughtful. Thank you," she smiled and Marcus looked relieved.

"Here, let me," he offered and took the books back in his arms. "You mentioned you didn't have time to explore the city so I thought I could show you around?"

"Sounds perfect," Dahlia smiled and they started to venture out together. Their footsteps echoed through the narrow cobblestone streets as Marcus pointed out some places of the city full of history.

"May I ask you, how long have you been traveling alone?" Marcus asked. Vampire covens weren't very common as most vampires preferred to travel alone or in pairs, but some vampires existed together over long periods of time.

Marcus noticed that a sudden sadness filled her eyes and a certain heaviness seemed to linger around her. When noticing the sudden change in her mood he added "You don't have to tell me anything you don't want to."

"No, it's fine," she assured, "I was in a coven and I was with one of the members. But he met someone else," she kept a small pause as she tried to collect her thoughts, "I just couldn't stay there so I left."

There was an intensity in Marcus' gaze, a fire that seemed to burn with ancient fury. His eyes held a mixture of sadness and anger that mirrored Dahlia's own shattered spirit. "He is a fool. You deserve so much more, Dahlia. I cannot undo the past or erase the pain you've endured but I swear to you that I won't let anyone hurt you, ever again."

"You barely know me," Dahlia chuckled lightly, surprised at his deep promises.

"I would love to get to know you more if you will have me," he said, his voice tinged with a mixture of fear and hope as he waited for her response.

Dahlia softly smiled, "I would love that."

They settled beneath the shade of a grand oak tree in a park. Just then she opened the rest of the books Marcus had given her and with each book, her smile seemed to get brighter. Marcus watched her with a mixture of delight and anticipation, eagerly awaiting her reaction to the words that had touched his soul.

Hours passed like fleeting moments as they wove in and out of conversations about their favorite passages, their own hopes and dreams.
